****'Pee Power' Runs Students' Car!
(Ohio-Based Firm Producing Clean Energy From Human Urine.)
ATHENS, Ohio -- An Ohio-based firm is finding ways to produce clean energy from human urine.
While urine is nearly 99 percent water, there's a lot of hydrogen in that remaining 1 percent from an organic compound called urea.
"We apply very small amount of energy, and this triggers a reaction," said Dr. Gerardine Botte with Ohio University.
Students at Ohio University have built a tiny car powered completely by "pee power," which researchers say could be a driving force in future transportation.
E-3 Technologies, a firm based in Athens, is developing the technology as its "green box." Small units might grab power from toilets in individual buildings, while large units could work in conjunction with wastewater treatment plants.
