****Rare Watermelon Fetches $4,000!
(Japan's Densuke Watermelons Prized For Black Rinds, Crisp Flesh.)
A prized Japanese watermelon fetched nearly $4,000 at an auction in Sapporo. And apparently, that's a bargain.
The four-figure price tag is actually a steep fall from the Densuke watermelon's peak season several years ago, when the top fruit sold for $6,100, the Wall Street Journal reported.
A rarity, Densuke watermelons are grown exclusively on Hokkaido, in northern Japan, and are prized for their black rinds and sweet, crisp flesh. The highest prices go to the 100 Densuke watermelons sold on the first day of their season.
Quantcast
This year's highest-selling fruit was sold to the Isetan department store for $3,743.
The watermelons typically cost $30, and one specially grown to be square-shaped costs about $80.
