Boy sees burglar kill dog

So sad - a brave dog, Troy, killed defending his home and family...

Just glad the boy was alright ...
I know we feel safer owning our dogs, possibly a false sense of security, but if nothing else they are an early warning system when intruders do arrive, and our neighbours and friends and the postman...

I certainly sleep better owning dogs I have been known to say I will not replace my two when they go. If my quality of sleep suffers when we donpt have them, I might have to reconsider that!

Meanwhile - RIP Troy and sad thoughts for the family.

Democrat Governors 2010 Strategy: GOP, Tea Party is Scaring Us!

First published at DBKP: 2010 Democrat Governors Strategy: The GOP is Scaring Us, Make Them Stop

Nathan Daschle is sending out emails, sounding the alarm for DemocratGovernors.org. . What's got Nathan so spooked? A 82-second video called "Remember November." Let's take a look at Nate's trembling missive.

"Hey Nathan! Booo! Got ya...."

AS ALWAYS, FEAR IS AN OPTION

FEAR STALKS THE DEMOCRAT GOVERNORS OF AMERICA

If readers smell something funny, it might just be the scent of pure terror.

That's according to Nathan Daschle, from the Democratic Governors.org. According to Nate's email, he's quaking with fear-or is it rage? Hard to remember which week this is.

So let's go to the email.

from: Nathan Daschle, DemocraticGovernors.org
date: Thu, Jun 3, 2010 at 12:23 PM
subject: [VIDEO] Coming This Fall

Dear Xxxxxx,

You heard from me recently about the new fear-centric marketing campaign by the Republican Governors Association. It's called 'Remember November,' and is based on the story of Guy Fawkes, the 17th-century English terrorist who tried to blow up Parliament.

Well, the DGA is responding to these sick tactics. But instead of using images of violence to incite fear, we went in a slightly different direction.

Click here to find out how we turned the RGA's ridiculous tactic on its head!

Watch the DGA's "Coming This Fall" video!

The future of our country should be driven by the vigor of America's great debate, not seditious flame-throwing rhetoric. Utter nonsense like 'Remember November' might be good for firing up the angry fringe, but it does absolutely nothing to move our country forward.

So please, check out our new video today -- and then forward it to 5 friends!

We need your help to show people that these dangerous antics by the GOP won't work. Show them we will hold them accountable and respond in a way that brings them right back to reality.

Thanks for all you've done, and all you continue to do, for the Democratic Governors Association.

-Nathan

P.S. Social networks are a great way to spread around videos like this one, so after you view it, be sure to share it with your friends on Facebook and Twitter!

What's the "sick tactics" video that has Nathan all riled up?

Let's take a quick look.

Readers may decide: was Nathan right to label this video "fear-centric marketing?"

I mean, if you're a Democrat Congressman or Senator and you're watching this, you probably do feel a little fear; after all, most of those in Congress have done little else their entire lives but belong to the political class.

Okay, Nathan, you might have a point there.

Is the video "great debate" or "seditious flame-throwing rhetoric?"

("Seditious," by the way, is the new buzzword; sorta like "racist" was last year and "Nazi" was during the Bush administration.

It's supposed that the GOP can be thankful that Nathan didn't call Remember September "a racist piece of seditious Nazi propaganda."

Suggestion for Daschle: if you really want to scare people, try this next time.

The Business School Wives Book Club: Part 5 (Russia)

G. K. Chesterton’s 1912 novella Manalive is, without question, a bit of an odd one. If you are wondering how it came to be selected for the Russian instalment of the Business School Wives Book Club, then I must say that initially, I shared your confusion. It turns out that in one of those flukes of the international book market, the quirky mysteries of English eccentric G. K. Chesterton have quite a following in Russia.

The setting for the story is however, a long way from Moscow. It is a bleak London guesthouse where a range of long term tenants are collectively miserable and directionless. A man, who is identified as one Innocent Smith appears in the garden, accompanied by a great wind. Within pages of his entry, he has induced declarations of love between other tenants, set up an autonomous High Court to deal with the business of the house and arranged to elope with the young companion of one of the house’s inmates. Happiness appears to explode over the house and the jaded and misanthropic feelings of the past are no more. Needless, to say, the story does not end there. Before long two doctors arrive with accusations against “Innocent” Smith that would make anyone raise an eye. Burglary; Desertion of Wife; Bigamy; Attempted murder: the man’s crimes appear to be legion. Is he mad or is he dangerous or is there a mysterious method in his history?

This was not the easiest of book club books to get into. It is a little heavy going due to the language and it is not always simple to work out who is speaking at any one time. It is however, quite funny and deals surprisingly and with a certain surrealistic sanity with the human need for happiness and contentment. What is even better, it can be read online here.

Although it was not a favourite read, the ruminations of one of its female characters on what makes the ideal man spawned a classic book club discussion. It seemed to us that GKC’s message was that to be happy one ought to choose a man with a hobby (however strange, and goodness me, you will find that Innocent Smith’s are strange) so that he isn’t forever hanging around the house. Encouraging.

I spot of googling has uncovered the exciting additional news that there is a film adaptation in postproduction. The latest is here. From the Business School Wives Book Club, goodbye for now.

Maisto Mustang & Camaro

More 1/64 posts from Maisto items. Maisto is generally cheaper then HotWheels and Matchbox. A whole $1.00 cheaper to be exact. It also mean that it is $1.00 less in quality and details. The two vehicles are 2010 Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro. The complaint I got from Maisto is the lack of details such as painting or decals on front or rear lamps.

The Ice Storm [1997]

A searing deconstruction of the American suburbia, Ang Lee’s much acclaimed The Ice Storm has as its company such disconsolate expositions on dysfunction and malaise as the likes of American Beauty and Little Children. Though not as relentlessly dark as the latter two, the film is no less distressing or, well, wintry. Set during one particularly cold Thanksgiving weekend in the 70’s in the wealthy suburbs of New York City, the film has at its centre an affluent family that is genial and civil on the outside, but crumbling from inside. The father (Kevin Kline) is having an affair with his attractive but frosty neighbour (Sigourney Weaver), the frigid mother (Joan Allen) is suffering from existential crises of her own, their daughter (Christiana Ricci) has become overtly promiscuous with their neighbour’s son (Elijah Wood) and his brother and emotionally detached, while their son (Tobey Maguire), one of the few characters deserving the audience’s sympathy and the movie’s mouthpiece, has fallen for a girl (Katie Holmes) who doesn’t seem to reciprocate his feelings. The film is replete with ironies, not least of all being, as this web of infidelity, rebelliousness and desperation is unfolding, threatening to rip the family apart, the Watergate Scandal is quietly playing in the background. The film, that forms a fine zeitgeist of the times portrayed, is exceptionally well performed by its ensemble cast, with the young brigade of Ricci, Maguire and Wood being especially brilliant.

Rushmore [1998]

Wes Anderson, one of the most highly regarded American filmmakers working today, garnered a lot of acclaim with his debut Indie feature Bottle Rocket. But it was his sophomore effort Rushmore that put him firmly and squarely on the world map. Co-written with college buddy Owen Wilson, the movie, like his other films, is quirky, irreverent, idiosyncratic and darkly funny, with latent yet palpable layers of humanism firmly embedded in the otherwise whimsical coming-of-age tale. Jason Schwartzman played the role of Max, a 15-year old student at an exclusive school called Rushmore who is exceptionally active in a horde of extra-curricular activities but for academics, to perfection. He meets, and falls heads-over-heels with the beautiful but emotionally debilitated first-grade teacher Miss Cross (lovingly portrayed by Olivia Williams). Meanwhile, an eccentric but world-weary business tycoon called Mr. Blume (played quite brilliantly by the amazing as always Bill Murray), who Max has befriended, also finds himself falling for the lady, thus setting the three for a collision course that eventually brings the them out of their self-made “little boxes”, as Pete Seeger would have said, and closer both to themselves and to each other. The combination of the breezy, unpredictable narrative, the dry and off-balancing wit and surprising emotional depth of the script, the colourful visuals and the excellent 60’s and 70’s pop soundtrack have all joined forces to make this offbeat film a cult classic among movie lovers.

The tent is in the car, and we're just about to drive north to my parents' camp up on Big River That Runs Between Two Countries for the long weekend. The weather has been so warm that we're all bringing bathing suits. The river water is pretty cold this time of year, but I know from experience the only way to swim in icy water: you just jump right in.

1/6 Blade Comic Ver.

My latest 1/6 figure collection. My ever favorite Blade from Marvel. I couldn't get hold of Hot Toys Blade II version so I ended up getting the Comic Version first. This is a product by Medicom Japan. Maybe in the future I will acquire the HT version so in the meantime here are some pictures for you to enjoy....

Overall, I will give it a 8.5/10 for the 1/6 Blade. Articulation is doing its job. Leather jacket has it authentic feels to it. Somehow I think Hot Toys product always reign over other 1/6 companies.

Ganashatru (An Enemy of the People) [1989]

Ganashatru, literally ‘An Enemy of the People’, was master auteur Satyajit Ray’s adaptation of the legendary play of the same name by Henrik Ibsen. Ray’s health was deteriorating alarmingly during this time and he was compelled to have a pacemaker placed in him. Consequently, the shooting was confined mostly to interiors. Having said that, though the film is considered among Ray’s lesser works, it was a pretty tight, engaging and competent film nonetheless – such is the quality of Ray’s oeuvre. The film, set in a small, peaceful town near Calcutta, has at its forefront the age-hold struggle between faith and science. Ashoke Gupta, a revered doctor who, while investigating a series of jaundice cases, becomes convinced that the ‘holy water’ being provided by a popular temple is the cause of those cases. And that sets him on collision course with his self-serving younger brother, who also happens to be the Mayor of the town, and who is absolutely opposed to Ashoke’s wanting to educate the people of it either through a newspaper article or ia public speaking. The film, which has a reasonably satisfying climax, is solidly performed by a motley crew of such respected actors like (Ray favourite and regular) Soumitra Chatterjee, Dhritiman Chatterjee, Mamata Shankar, Dipankar Dey et al.

I speak for everyone ....

Dear Mother Nature,

We're done! And we are at  your mercy .. have been for a long time now. We apologize for whatever it was that made you punish us this way - most harshly. Whatever it takes for you to stop, we will do it. I speak for all Calgarians when I beg you to please stop making it snow. I am on my knees, and not in the good way. Almost to the verge of praying. We forgot and forgave when it snowed at the end of April, but this isn't funny anymore. Please. For the love of all things good and warm, make it stop snowing.

Sad, cold, wet,
Stacy

The next James Bond book will be written by Jeffery Deaver, Simon & Schuster announced on Thursday. The novel, with the working title “Project X,” is expected to be set in the present day and take Bond to at least three “exotic locations around the globe.” It is scheduled for publication in May 2011. Jeffrey - I feel I can call him that, after all we did do dinner (an Indian restaurant in Ayr if you must ask)  - said in a statement that he was thrilled to be asked by representatives of the Ian Fleming estate to write the book. “The novel will maintain the persona of James Bond as Fleming created him and the unique tone the author brought to his books, while incorporating my own literary trademarks: detailed research, fast pacing and surprise twists.”

The club will meet once a month in the Telegraph offices in London to discuss a book of their choosing over cheese and wine. Their generosity knows no bounds. The discussion will be chaired by Genevieve Fox, whose book club column has been published in the same paper over the past year.

If you would like to join the Telegraph Book Club, send a short letter about yourself and a 100 word review of any book to bookclub@telegraph.co.uk; or to 111 Buckingham Palace Road, London SW1W 0DT. Please mark letters Telegraph Book Club.

The final date for submissions is Friday June 18. Note that you will need to be able to travel to the monthly meetings in London and to pay your own expenses – bummer – and that you’d like you to commit to being involved with the book club for one year.

Stieg Larsson's UK publisher Quercus reports strong results for the 2009 calendar year, with turnover up 75%, profits up 4,150% and a positive cash flow for the first time in the company's history...

...let me repeat that – 4,150%.

According to a statement released to the markets on the 26th May, the publisher saw revenue grow from £10.9m in 2008 to £19.1m last year, with consolidated operating profit up from £28,000 to £1.19m. Them’s some big numbers people. Just a shame Stieg didn’t live to see his amazing success.

La Biblioteca Deserta - Travelling Without Gravity (2010)

Quote: "La Biblioteca Deserta is a cathedral of emotions, where sound and silence come to life, originated by phantom words. The musical project starts during 2006, when five young composers (all born between 1986 and 1988) unite, glued together by their will to communicate through music.

These are the premises for their brave choice to venture into an instrumental post-rock, which combines Mediterranean sounds with North European atmospheres (eg. Mogwai, Sigur Ròs, Muse, Coldplay), heading towards a very dynamic experience, sumptuous crescendos and mighty explosions.

The band soon delivers their first efforts, which are met by both critical success and positive feedback by the general public, with several positive reviews on various specialized music web magazines, all around the world (as far as Japan and China). Constant live touring helps to band to perform in many important venues all around Italy, supporting various national and international artists, such as Marta sui Tubi, Ministri, APSE, Eric Chenaux. They also take part in many important music contests and festivals: Festa Europea Della Musica, Souni a sud-est (vincitori nell’edizione 2008), Planet of Sound, Biennale Dei Giovan i Artisti Europei, Laguna Street Festival, Saint Rock Festival, Music Festa, MEI, Italia Wave, Tour Music Fest, Fiera Della Musica, Cime Di Rock, No Day.

After being noticed by the music magazine "Rock Star", which features their song "Dalla Terra alla Luna" in their November 2009 issue, together with works from other important artists such as Teatro degli Orrori, Dente, Le Luci della Centrale El ettrica and many other indie acts, the band issues their first full length album, "Travelling without gravity", produced by the independent record label Faro Records, released on December 21st, 2009. The album has been mixed at Itaca Recording Studios by Mirko Patella, who has worked for Amari, La Fame di Camilla, Leitmotiv.

The adventure has just started."
