Kreative Blogger Award

Bill Kirton, crime writer extraordinaire, man of excellent taste and all round good guy (is that obsequious enough, Bill?) has nominated May Contain Nuts for a Kreative Blogger Award.

This is an award which comes with strings. These strings follow....

1. Thank the person who nominated you.
2. Copy the logo and place it on your blog.
3. Link to the person who nominated you for this award.
4. Name 7 things about yourself that people might find interesting – or that they don't know.
5. Nominate 7 Kreative Bloggers.
6. Post links to the 7 blogs you nominate.
7. Leave a comment on each of the blogs letting them know they have been nominated.

A couple of things occur to me...this is a blogging version of a chain mail email...and it is designed to generate more of an audience for other bloggers I enjoy.

Cool, I can deal with that.

I am happy to comply with the strings, mainly because I’m terrified that if I don’t my computer will get a virus, my teeth will fall out and I’ll grow even more hair out of my ears.

I’ve already thanked Bill with a fulsomeness that is frankly overdone and almost deserved. The link to his blog is on the right of this posting. No. The other right.

Mmmm. Seven things...seven things...I can hardly think of one thing...seven things

1. I used to do Highland dancing when I was a wee boy. I danced in town halls throughout Ayrshire and even on the back of a lorry that was going through Irvine. I think it was called a float and it was a festival of sorts...I wasn’t going cheap or anything.

2. I can’t stand intolerance of anything or anyone. Life presents enough challenges for us all without automatically despising someone because they hold a different view from mine. Love and peace to all, man.

3. I am a qualified Life Coach. Can’t you tell?

4. I raced at the Meadowbank Stadium in Edinburgh in 1973. Age 11. This was one of the best tracks in Scotland at the time. Spongy. I was running for the Ayrshire Boy Scouts. I was the fastest boy in the area and the stupid bastards entered me in the Egg n’ Spoon race. Which, to compound matters was run on the grass. The waste. This has haunted me every day of my life.

5. I spoke with a pharmacist today who thinks I have blepharatis. This is a chronic condition which involves dry eyes and a swelling of the eyelid. Basically, I look like shit and I will continue to look like shit for the rest of my life.

6. I am the eternal optimist. Aside from point 5, every upcoming event in my life I expect to go well. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t. That’s life, innit. But the positive expectation certainly helps. See point 3.

7. I was born at seven minutes past the hour, seven minutes after my sister on the seventh day of the month. If there are any numerologists out there, can you tell me what this means?

So...the blogs I enjoy and would like to nominate... (I know I’m supposed to do the linking thing, where the reader can just click on and get taken through to the blog, but if I had a thing 8 to write about, it would say that I lack a certain technological expertise)...in no particular order

Marley Delarose is a cool lady and read more about her at http://marleydelaroseauthor.blogspot.com/

Introducing....

The first “Don’t Let the Door Hit you on the Arse on The Way Out Awards" go to....

...whoever ordered the giant dryer at the local swimming pool. It’s a huge red thing you stand in and for £1 it blasts you with hot air after your dip. How lazy is that? How much energy do you need to wield a towel? A supplementary award goes to the chumps waiting in line to use the dryer. Two minutes or more standing shivering wrapped in a towel when said towel could have been put to better use. Stating the obvious here, but by the time they waited they could have been dry already.

...the policeman who fined the local man £50. This poor fella exited a shop after a small purchase. As he walked he pocketed his change (a £10 note) and his receipt. Sadly, the note fell out of his pocket. The policeman spotted this and tapped the shopper on the shoulder. Said shopper was relieved that his money was spotted falling, as being on social benefits he couldn’t afford to lose £10. Once the money was safely tucked into his wallet, the policeman slapped him with the £50 fine. For littering. True.

...whoever came up with the word “unveiled” when a football (soccer) player or manager is newly signed to a team and introduced as such to the world’s media. I always have an image of somebody standing there covered up by a piece of cloth and said cloth being whipped off to huge fanfare. Can you imagine the size of cloth that will be needed by Real Madrid to unveil Christiano Ronaldo? The size of his head? They’re gonna need a marquee. The worrying thing is that we are now entering the silly season when players and managers will be signed to their new teams on a daily basis. All of them will be announced as being “unveiled” by a media that really needs to stop using this fecking word.

...the organisers of the recent Air Sex competition in New York. You’ve heard of Air Guitar and possibly Air Drums? Air Sex is when the sad bastard, sorry competitor acts as if he/ she is having sex with an invisible partner. We are however to be grateful for small mercies as the numpties/sorry competitors keep their clothes on throughout. "Air sex is the only kind of sex I usually have anyway," said Travis Green, 20 a recent fuckwit, sorry competitor. No surprises there then.

Family Ties

My thoughts have been chaotic this week... lot of things happening at work, home, around and about. It has kept me from blogging, but thank you, I have been reading everyone else's :)

I don't know where to begin today.. had a load of work stress that I could well do without... been hard enough there in the past year with the volume of changes to the infrastructure, staff losses, high enrolments and slashed budgets, but it is taking its toll on the people, and the students, which makes for some emotional stress. It is tiring... a universal trend I am sure everyone can relate to...

The exciting art this week is that my youngest son turns 18 this Friday... exciting for him as now he can drink and vote, hopefully not in that order.  For me, it also makes me feel a little sad, and old! Certainly reminds me that my life is entering a new era and I have no idea whatsoever what to do with it.

His lovely friend and workmate arranged a surprise party... and somewhere there is a video of his arrival and near heart attack as we all leaped out ... was so funny and so worth it.  My daughter and I had to nonchalantly find excuses to be out, then leave the house while he was getting ready for a "dinner party" and beat him there.... was great to see his friends and meet his work mates too. So Happy Birthday - I am so proud of you and wish you every happiness in your adult life :)

James and Jess are well - preparing for the arrival of the monsoon in Bangladesh. They managed to visit a theme park there recently...

Not sure it is where I would do my first roller coaster ride but Jess was game!!!!

Check out the latest news at: Fantasy Kingdom

Phoebe's family have been writing in their blog too - lots of news. Amazingly, the area has actually had frosts - which they will handle well, but the locals are a bit stunned! Meanwhile, they have found somewhere to live and move in next weekend. The house looks like a real beach house.. open plan and great for the kids, in a beautiful part of the world that my partner and I already know well from when we both lived up there ourselves. (At separate times, long ago).  Stanmore Beach - on the Whangaparoa Peninsula north of Auckland. The school is handy and has a kindy in it... We have checked it on google earth, been pleased it has a spare bedroom (they have already bought a spare bed for all the vistors) and our tickets are all booked for the September holidays...

The other exciting news is that while their Dad is away, all the girls are coming back here for a visit in the July school holidays which is exciting news; will be wonderful to see them again - I can get some more photos then too :)

So, in this family orientated week, I think the new ad for a New Zealand bank sums it all up perfectly... and this is not intended to be a plug for the bank! I don't bank with them... but they do, however, capture the feel-good emotion and I always love their piggies ;)
The music is by Tiki Taane.... a New Zealand performer...in fact he is from Christchurch....
Lyrics  here....

"Always on my Mind".

Last but not least, I also got a blog award from Tracey - thank you so much :)

I have had a think and would like to give it to some people outside my immediate circle of bloggers who have all had this award already! They all deserve it - and I would be more than happy to return it to Odette , Kirst,  Amy, Saz and Moannie...whose blogs all appear on my roll call :)

Idiots of the Week

AND THE WINNERS ARE:

The winner of this week's Idiot Award is the genius who decided to rename New York City's Triborough Bridge in honor Robert F. Kennedy. For those of you under 35 and/or recent graduates of government schools who don't see the irony in naming a bridge after a Kennedy, just google 'Chappaquidick'.

In a close second we have the student counselors at Ottawa's Carlton University. These yahoos voted to cancel a cystic fibrosis fundraiser because the disease “has been recently revealed to only affect white people, and primarily men”. Apparently the disease wasn't 'inclusive' enough. Translation: Your life isn't worth anything unless you're a member of a politically correct victim group. Here's hoping these kids don't pro-create.

RUNNER-UP:

The 'sanitation experts' who marked World Toilet Day by calling for the end of the flush toilet in order to save water and provide fertilizer for crops. I kid you not.

HONORABLE MENTION:

Politically correct NHS bosses in Birmingham, England are battling to ban a smoking room for terminally ill patients – forcing them to be turfed out into the cold to enjoy their final cigarettes.

Millionaire and NBA superstar Gilbert Arenas decided to show his support for President-elect Barack Obama by getting a political tattoo on his left hand. Ain't it cute?

He's not alone...A brothel in Europe offered free entry to anyone who had the brothel's name tattooed on their arm. To date, 40 idiots have taken them up on their offer.

A woman is divorcing her husband after he told her it was an "iPhone glitch" that sent pictures of his genitals to another woman. Inquiring minds want to know if he plans to sue.

A group of idiots has started a petition to get pole dancing into the Olympic games.

MOST STUPID CRIMINALS:

You might wonder what this picture depicts... Its an ATM machine with an idiot under it. A thief pried an ATM loose from a Leavenworth credit union by using a stolen skid loader. Then — in an alleged effort to bust open the boosted ATM — the 49-year-old idiot decided to use the skid loader to drop the machine down a 50-foot wooded embankment. “It makes it easier when you let go of it. That way you don’t go with it,” said Leavenworth Police Chief Patrick Kitchens.

A 21-year-old man was accused of driving drunk and leading police on a chase that finally ended with him running over himself.

A pair of 17-year-olds allegedly try to rob armed off-duty Dona Ana deputy at knife point in Las Cruses. Oops!

Last, but not least, we have a police chief in Southwestern Ohio. As he was giving his daughter a lesson in gun safety, he accidentally shot himself in his thigh. Moral of the story: make sure gun is unloaded before giving lessons.

MOST IDIOTIC STATEMENTS:

The chairman of the British Lap Dancing Association, speaking at a legislative hearing Tuesday, made an odd assertion, given his livelihood — a lap dance is "not sexually stimulating".

A lawyer representing a man arrested in Fairfield for drunken driving says the state’s breathalyzers discriminate against black people. Racist machines?

MOST IDIOTIC STATEMENTS BY ELECTED OFFICIALS:

While arguing in favor of legislation requiring that anyone report a lost or stolen firearm report that within 24 hours or potentially face a $500 fine, Pittsburgh Councilwoman Tonya Payne said, "Who really cares about it being constitutional?"

Tonya is joined by U.S. Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.) who, with a straight face, praised the idea of wealth redistribution and maligned the idea that people who create wealth should be entitled to keep it. Can you spell socialism?

Anyone can be stupid but it takes real effort to be an idiot. Feel free to send in contenders for next week's Idiot Awards. Meanwhile, keep smiling.

NFLNFL Parity Scheduling: Some Playoff Teams Are Dogs

Your Ad Here

NFL Parity Scheduling:
Who Will be 2008's Parity Dog?

Parity Dog Winners 2003-2007
Likely 2008 Parity Dog Contenders

For casual followers, the National Football League's scheduling is rigged.

It's not an accusation: it's a fact--and one of which the league is proud. It's called parity scheduling by the NFL.

Parity scheduling has a purpose: it allows some not-so-good teams a chance to make the playoffs. Fans from even the worst teams have reason to cheer every other year.

Some might call it "planned mediocrity". The NY Times calls it "socialized football". From N.F.L. Parity Ensures Anxiety Is Shared Equally :
Coach killers are not rebel players or doomed franchises or the injury fates. What kills a coach most often — whether he is fired, quits or retires — is N.F.L. parity. Or socialized football brought to you by the hard salary cap.

The league put in the hard cap in 1993 to provide every team, no matter how large the owner’s wallet, an even chance to compete for the Super Bowl. Basically, these league landlords devised a system to promote mediocrity while insisting their teams rise above it. In essence, owners are desperate to hire safe crackers for their own homes.

The concept behind scheduling for parity is simple: if you have a good record, you'll be schedule against tougher opponents the next year. If you have a bad year, you'll get a break.

The weak sisters of the NFL therefore get to play each other and the best of the previous year's losers has a chance to make the playoffs--and usually a quick trip home after a sound thumping by one of the team which survived a tougher schedule.

Let's call this manufactured playoff team, the "Parity Dog".

There is a formula for each NFL team's 16-game schedule and it goes something like this:
  • Home and away games are played against their three division opponents, totaling 6 games.
  • There are four teams from another division that are rotating on a three year cycle within its conference, totaling 4 games.
  • There are four teams from another division (non-conference) that play on a rotating four-year cycle, totaling 4 games.
  • The last two inter-conference games are based on the prior year’s last standings totaling 2 games. The games are matched against a first place team and the first place team in a two same conference division team. This is not scheduled to play in that season. The same cycle is matched for second, third, and fourth placed teams each year.

It's these last two games that put the "par" in "parity". If a team wins its division, the next year, it will face two other division winners. If the team finishes last in its division, its reward: two games against two other last-place teams.

Not all bad teams get easy schedules: Cincinnati's 2008 schedule is an example. Call it the (bad) luck of the 2008 draw.

The Bengals are in the AFC North. This is the year the AFC North's non-conference opponents come from the NFC East (NY Giants, Washington, Dallas, Philadelphia). All of those NFC teams are tough this year and all have winning records.

The AFC North's matched up with the teams from the AFC South (Indianapolis, Tennessee, Jacksonville, Houston) in 2008. None are push-overs. Intra-divison rivalry games are always tough, so that gives Cincinnati 12 tough games and two easy ones.

Who's likely to be 2008's parity dog(s)?

Who were the parity dogs from the last five years?

Let's take a look.

PARITY DOG ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFYING CRITERIA:

Teams which 1) had one of the 10 easiest schedules (according to their record the previous year); 2) made the playoffs; and 3) made a quick exit.

STYLE POINTS: If the Parity Dog contender gets blown out the first round of the playoffs, extra consideration will be given to that team.

TWO DOGS in the FIGHT: (With apologies to Michael Vick)
If two Parity Dogs meet in a first-round playoff game, the winner is not eliminated from Parity Dog consideration, but a playoff victory makes it very difficult to lay claim to being a Parity Dog.

The 12 Easiest 2008 NFL Schedules
(based on 2007 final records of their scheduled 2008 opponents):

  • New England - .387 (99-157)
  • San Diego - .422 (108-148)
  • Oakland - .438 (112-144)
  • Denver - .445 (114-142)
  • New Orleans - .449 (115-141)
    Buffalo - .449 (115-141)
  • Kansas City .453 (116-140)
  • New York Jets - .457 (117-139)
  • Atlanta - .461 (118-138)
  • Carolina - .465 (119-137)
    Miami - .465 (119-137)
    Arizona - .465 (119-137)

2008 Records of the 12 Teams with the Easiest Schedules

  • New York Jets 8-3
  • Carolina 8-3
  • Atlanta 8-3
  • New England 7-4
  • Arizona 7-4
  • Denver 6-5
  • Miami 6-5
  • Buffalo 6-5
  • New Orleans 6-5
  • San Diego 4-7
  • Oakland 3-8
  • Kansas City 1-10

Only three of the 12 teams with the easiest schedules have losing records.

This is not good news for Kansas City and Oakland: when you have one of the easiest schedules in the league and your record is 1-10, you've got some problems. San Diego has only managed four wins thus far this season.

For the Chargers, it may be that injuries, talent, team chemistry and coaching are too much for even an easy schedule to cure.

Of the 12, parity dogs abound.

The NY Jets, Carolina, Atlanta, New England, Arizona and Denver have the best chances at making the playoffs at the moment. New Orleans, Buffalo and Miami have outside chances.

And that might be a blessing: all three are likely to meet a quick demise in the playoffs--if they qualified.

Best bets for 2008 Parity Dog honors: Arizona, Denver and Atlanta.

All are suspect, regardless of what their boosters claim. In fact, Denver would be slinking off into the sunset in every other division but the NFC North.

The 10 Toughest 2008 NFL Schedules
(based on 2007 final records of their scheduled 2008 opponents):

  • Pittsburgh - .594 (opponents won 153 and lost 103 combined in 2007)
  • Indianapolis - .592 (152-104)
  • Jacksonville - .559 (143-113)
  • Minnesota - .551 (141-115)
    Baltimore - .551 (141-115)
  • Cincinnati - .547 (140-116)
    Houston - .547 (140-116)
    Cleveland - 547 (140-116)
  • Detroit - .543 (139-117)
    Tennessee - .543 (139-117)

--Toughest NFL Schedules 2008

2008 Records of the 10 Teams with the Hardest Schedules

  • Tennessee 10-1
  • Pittsburgh 8-3
  • Baltimore 7-4
  • Indianapolis 7-4
  • Minnesota 6-5
  • Houston 4-7
  • Jacksonville 4-7
  • Cleveland 4-7
  • Cincinnati 1-9-1
  • Detroit 0-11

So, as can be seen, half of the teams with the toughest schedules are playing .500 or better in 2008; half are not. There may be more reasons for Cincinnati and Detroit's woeful record than injuries, talent, the front office or coaching.

Four of the teams with the toughest schedules have reasonable hopes for the playoffs: Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Tennessee and Baltimore. Minnesota has hopes; how reasonable they are is debatable.

Originally, it was intended to name Parity Dogs from 1998-2007, but finding the strength of schedule for those earlier years proved to be time-consuming. We'll add those earlier years in an upcoming article.

So, there's a few things the reader can take away from all of this.

1) If your favorite NFL team finished in last place in their division, you'll have a shot at the playoffs next year, courtesy of the National Football League's parity scheduling. You'll get all of the help the NFL can offer a team that's down-on-their-luck.

Then, next year, your team will be in the running for the coveted 2009 Parity Dog honors.

2) If your favorite NFL team grabbed one of the highly-prized Parity Dog tags, try to look on the bright side: at least they made the playoffs.

In other words, you had a dog in the hunt.
