James Arness dies at 88; TV's Marshal Dillon on landmark 'Gunsmoke' series

Strong, rugged, a man’s man is how I always looked at Jamez Arness. He was the TV version of John Wayne.

James Arness, the towering actor best known for portraying Marshal Matt Dillon, the strong and commanding symbol of frontier justice on the landmark TV western series "Gunsmoke," died Friday. He was 88.
Arness died of natural causes at his home in Brentwood, said family spokesperson Ginny Fazer.

"Gunsmoke" debuted on CBS on Sept. 10, 1955, and, with the start of "The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp" on ABC four days earlier, a new era in television horse operas was launched: the adult western.

But whereas "Wyatt Earp," starring Hugh O'Brian, ended its run in 1961, "Gunsmoke" ran until 1975, far outdistancing its many competitors and becoming one of the longest-running prime-time series in network TV history.

In the process, Arness became one of television's most enduring stars, returning as Dillon in a handful of "Gunsmoke" TV movies in the late '80s and early '90s.

At 6 feet 7, Arness was a bigger-than-life actor who amply filled the boots of the mythic Dodge City lawman in the series, which earned praise for breaking TV western-genre conventions with its strong dramatic stories and psychologically complex characters.

"Matt," Arness once said, "is very human and has all the failings and drives common to anyone who is trying to do a difficult job the best he knows how."

Arness was nominated for Emmys three times during the show's early years. Like John Wayne on the big screen, Arness was an imposing presence on the small screen.

"I absolutely believe any pantheon of enduring, well-crafted and memorable television characters would have to include James Arness," David Bushman, then the television curator at what is now the Paley Center for Media in New York, told The Times some years ago. "He became part of the national psyche."

The Sun reports these girls Shore look good as they prepare for stardom ahead of their TV debut.
The four Geordie Shore lasses show they are the bust in the world of reality TV by posing in racy black lingerie

And they vowed to show viewers that they are even sexier than the girls from The Only Way Is Essex when the show kicks off on MTV tonight.

Vicky Pattison, 23, told Nuts magazine: "What's really sexy about Geordie Shore is that we're all ourselves, whereas girls in Essex are constantly dolled up to the nines."

And when asked if they would say that Newcastle is the only way, rather than Essex, 20 year-old Charlotte Letitia-Crosby hit back "that's exactly what I'd say!"

But they made it clear that they respected the TOWIE gang.

When asked if they'd prefer a night out with the Essex girls or the posh Made In Chelsea cast, Sophie Kasaei, 21, replied: "Essex all over".

The trio, along with Holly Hagan, 18, will join lads Gary Beadle, 23, Jason Gardner, 24, Greg Lake, 26, and James Tindale, 20, in the Newcastle version of Jersey Shore, which sees them have a wild time while sharing a house together.

The programme will start on Tuesday, May 24 at 10pm on MTV

It's the new show that plans to give The Only Way Is Essex and Made In Chelsea a run for their reality TV money.
But after just one episode, the cast mates of Geordie Shore have already managed to anger Newcastle natives.

Locals are believed to be furious after the show's debut airing on Tuesday night which saw cast members stripping off, vomiting and getting drunk.
More than 23,000 people have joined a Facebook page - called R.I.P Geordie Pride - slamming the show and the cast.

It has emerged that Baena, who worked at the Schwarzeneggers' housekeeper for 20 years, gave birth just five days after Arnold's wife Maria Shriver gave birth to the couple's second son.

Arnold Schwarzenegger's wife and housekeeper mistress gave birth within five days of each other, it has emerged.
Mildred Baena's son, believed to be the former California governor's love child, was born on October 2, 1997, according to documents unearthed today.

The actor and his wife Maria Shriver welcomed their second son, Christopher, on September 27 that same year.

For not only was the 51-year-old actress remarrying her first husband - she had also managed to squeeze herself into the very dress she wore 29 years ago.
And while she said it felt like the fitting thing to do, the Hollywood star confessed it was perhaps not the most comfortable to wear.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Marie revealed: 'I can't breathe, but I'm in it.'
Marie also told how she had got a new dress designed, but it didn't feel right when she saw the finished product.

'I had a dress all designed [for this wedding] and when it showed up it was not [right],' she told Entertainment Tonight's Mary Hart in an interview to be aired tomorrow.

'I was so sad, I was actually kind of in tears,' she recalled, adding: 'I was cleaning out my garage and all of a sudden this box showed up in this pile of stuff … and it was this dress and it was five days ago.
'I'm not kidding. Isn't that crazy?'

Of course she might not have been able to have got into her old dress at all if it wasn't for her dramatic weight loss over recent years.
