Barack Hussein Obama: The Origin of Obama's Names

Is Barack Hussein Obama a Muslim Name?
What's in a Name?

More than a few inaccurate stories about the origins of Barack Obama's name have made their way into mainstream media, so I thought I'd do some research fo my own.

In an effort to allow voters and interested media to educate themselves, rather than relying on pre-conceived notions and partisan spin from both sides, I started without pre-established concepts or assumptions and attempted to avoid propaganda effects by using original sources from prior to Barack Obama even becoming a public figure and Illinois Senator in 1997.

Let's proceed, shall we?

Barack Obama's full name is Barack(1) Hussein(2) Obama (3).

(1) The name Barack is a form of the Arabic word Baraka or Barakah, meaning blessing (from the root "Brk"), specifically, the "meaning of Barakah in an Islamic sense" refers to "the presence of divine blessing in an object and increasing those blessing." (http://forums.almaghrib.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=1121)

So what contains Barakah? The Qur'an and The Prophets, according to the following site.

So where might find the name of a Qur'an prophet?

(2) Barack Obama's middle name Hussein is derived from the muslim prophet Muhammed's grandson, (son of Fatima), specifically:

""Husayn diminutive form of Hasan, which is derived from hasan (beautiful, handsome, good). Husayn, one of the most popular Muslim names, was borne by Al-Husayn (626-80), a son of the Prophet's daughter Fatima and Ali ibn-Abi-Talib. Husayn and his followers were massacred at Kerbela on October 10, 680, a day that is now celebrated as a Holy Day for the Shiites. The name is also borne by the king of Jordan, Husayn ibn-Talal (b. 1935). He ascended to the throne in 1953 after the abdication of his father in 1952. Var: Hisein, Husain, Hussain, Hussein (HOO-SANE)" p. 374

-A World of Baby Names, by Teresa Norman, 1996 p. 374 (images attached).

Norman also contends that "Arabic names can be put into two general categories: pre-Islamic and post-Islamic. Pre-Islamic names were mainly influenced by nature, occupations, personal characteristics and genealogy. Post-Islamic names were influenced by the Prophet Muhammad, the catalyst for the beginning of a vast cultural transformation in the Arab world". p. 369

So what does Obama mean?

(3) The name Obama is a family name three generations back, from Barack Obama's father "Barack Obama, Sr.", to his father, "Hussein Onyango Obama", and likely before, though earlier records will probably be found only in archives.

Those wishing to further research Hussein Onyango Obama's father might check a 1935 dental study done of the 190 boys and men at the Jalou
Maseno school in 1935.

For those curious about the name Onyango, it apparently means born in the morning in Jalou, the language of Obama's grandfather, from the Jalou Tribe in Kenya that occupied the shores along Lake Victoria and Kisumu Bay

Conclusion

The name Barack (blessing) prepended on the second name Hussein (grandson of Mohammed) modifies Hussein like an adjective, and Barack Hussein Obama literally means "Blessing of Al-Husayn" Obama.

Again, Al-Husayn was son of the muslim Prophet Mohammed's daughter Fatima (and Ali ibn-Abi-Talib,), who was massacred at Kerbela on October 10, 680.

The name Barack is Arabic in origin, and when isolated is not necessarily muslim. The name Hussein is muslim in origin, and when combined the name Barack Hussein Obama is muslim.

Hot News This Week #4

>> HOT NEWS THIS WEEK: Is World Getting Crazier?

Seriously, who would say something like that? Except for wars, poverty, food crisis, oil price skyrocketing, market slumming, environmental disasters and the surge of sex related crimes, the world is fine. We (at least the readers of my blog) are still alive and kicking frantically clicking through the webs. Nevertheless, we should stop for a while and reflects our world conditions. No, I am not talking about nature and how to save them again, not yet.

News 1: A Racist Grandmother

A grandmother, who has a daughter and three grandchildren, was woken three times by a group of drunken and noisy students, who were shouting drunkenly and kicking bins. The former policewoman got dressed, went outside and shouted at them:

"Why can't you go back to where you come from and make some noise there? I bet your families and neighbors wouldn't put up with it. You don't care about us and do just as you like. What gives you the right to frighten my elderly neighbors, cause damage and keep us awake at night?"

And 4 months later, she was charged for using racially aggravated threatening words. It turned out that two Asians in the group had complained to the police. In her defend:

"The last thing I am is a racist. I have a totally inclusive attitude to different races and cultures - I don't care if you are black, white, green or a Martian. Their color had nothing to do with it - it was their behavior."
Well, I am an Asian too. But I don't think what she did is racist. The 51 years-old just trying to get some sleep for God sake. This incident only shows that authorities today are willing to charged without using any common sense. Not that I agree that racism should left unpunished, we just need to consider the facts and situations before any further harm was done. Racism should be handled delicately as it is a very sensitive issue (Malaysian government, please take note).

News 2: First Man In World to Give Birth Shows His Child

"Thomas Beatie says he is just like any other normal father. But he is about as far as you could be from typical. He claims to have given birth to the child. Although born a woman, Beatie had his breasts removed and lives outwardly as a man after changing his gender to male. The 34-year-old says he retained his female sex organs because he intended to have children one day." - Daily Mail

Okay, the truth is he is still she as she still has female sex organs, but to make my writing easier, I will refer to the individual as he. I already read months ago about this news. Although he has not given birth then. The buzz of 'the miracle' never got to me because he was not born as a male, just change his gender later. Nevertheless, after I saw the pictures of his innocent daughter, my heart touched. I really hope that her parent will deliver to their daughter the news that the person who actually given her birth was her father instead of her mother.

This is not a really great news to debate with, and I do not specified my view of this matter. I just want to know what do you think about it.

New 3: What is in a name?

There are many weird names in this planet. Just check the celebrities children names. It ranges from the Moon and to the Inspector Gadget. I once wrote a post about name and pronunciation complaining about how my name is hard to pronounce. But, I will be much pleased with my name (and I am pretty sure everyone else will pleased with their name too) compared to this 9 years-old who name is Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii - for real.

That's the unfortunate appellation a girl was given by her parents - but now a New Zealand judge has ordered she should become a ward of court until she can choose a name she really likes. She is at the center of a custody battle. A family court judge cited a list of unfortunate names that he said were embarrassing or made children seem foolish among their peers.

Some names, including Fish and Chips (twins), Yeah Detroit, Stallion, Twisty Poi, Keenan Got Lucy and Sex Fruit, were blocked by registration officials, he said. But others were allowed, including Number 16 Bus Shelter, Midnight Chardonnay, Benson and Hedges (twins) 'and tragically, Violence,' the judge said.

And now, who said the world is getting crazier? I am sure the insanity of this world is not comparable from other planets in this galaxy. Just hope that the last shows of insanity before the world end is Paris Hilton will be married and settle down with her four kids. We all deserve that kind of insanity.

Why Hot Shit Form Here?

I have been asked a lot of questions why I chose to name my blog, HOT SHIT FORM HERE. Some of them even said that I try to mislead my readers. If you feel that I am misleading you, feel sorry for yourself. I thought we are not suppose to judge a blog by its title? Well, if you do, then it's means that my publicities and advertisements are working. It does has a catchy title right?

I chose Hot Shit Form Here because I want to talk about many simple things that happen daily in our life. Things that thousand of people already talk about. From a simple ingredients (such as tags, entertainment, etc), to more highly contained multivitamins and fibers (life, friendship, love, etc), it all happens here.

I am just providing the foods, my readers acting as the enzymes and my blog is the intestine. We will digest it together into more useful products. Even the most common thing when viewed differently will give a different perspective. This not means that I not hygienic nor it leads to unhealthy lifestyle, instead I try to develop it into something that is beneficial to us while enjoying its tasty features.
Be daring, be outstanding, be impractical, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers, the creatures of the commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary. - Cecil Beaton
I do hope you enjoy reading my blog. I want to make a few changes in it when my holiday starts next week. The hardest struggle of all is to be something different from what the average man is. So, what do you think about my blog? How to improve it? Any comments and suggestions are welcome.

Name and Pronounciation

I got the inspiration to write this post after reading my dear friend Waliz in the Waliz Diary. One of her post is about her name. My full name is MOHD HAAZIQ. [noted the double As] A name that is suppose to means "intelligence" in Islamic meaning. I am not sure if I have managed to wear my name with a proud but I am definitely trying.

After almost twenty one years of living, I have noticed that somehow my name is quite hard to pronounce. Several of the wrong pronunciations and spellings are:
  • Hazziz
  • Haazik
  • Hazzik
  • Hazziq
  • Haa,aziq
  • Haaiz
My friends usually calls me Aziq or Haziq. And this is my name is Arabic:

My Arabic's skill doesn't take off well. Studying a new language always a challenge for me. Who want to learn how speak Malay? haha. Anyway, I really hope that my name won't turn into the "Blackest" name [read more? Click Related Post at the bottom of page]. Human shouldn't be judge only by its name! If you are a job interviewer, should you just ignore me just because my name sound silly? What if my name sound like "James Bond" or Jason Bourne"? Should I be hired? Oh wait a minute, what if my name sound "Asian"?
