i know this for sure i'm walkin out that door
Thanks to Rebecca I'm reading Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld. I am an avid devourer of the classic "coming of age" genre, and I blame that solely on JD Salinger, but in my recent trespasses through the land of craziness (aka adolescence) I've been reading from the POV of boys. And while I love boys more than most girls do, I'm kinda getting tired of the same I-touched-her-breast-and-came-in-my-pants-so-I-played-it-cool-by-acting-like-a-dick-and-in-the-end-I-redeemed-myself narrative. (Of course those narratives are so endearing it makes me ache for the days of oversized Fila polos and cracking voices, but alas, so much of the same thing can only go so far.)So anyway, I encountered Prep, a book I've seen at Barnes a million times and somehow always scorned based on the trepidation/resentment I've had for that particular brand of clique since middle school. I started reading it 3 days ago, and it's hard to put it down. To have the feelings I had in high school and again upon entering Muhlenberg as an unsophisticated naive kid on almost a full academic/financial aid scholarship, is thrilling. Sittenfeld writes those muddled, anxious, almost addicting feelings of desperation and yet at the same time excitement better than anyone. I can't wait to see how it ends..........In other news, the headiest band I loveeee Dr. Dog was on Conan last night. They played "Old Days," and it was nothing short of awesome. Can't wait to see them on Thursday. Don't forget you can preview their album on their myspace: http://www.myspace.com/drdog and the album goes on sale on TUESDAY!Siren Fest at Coney Island is tomorrow. Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks headline, but I also want to see Ra Ra Riot.Sunday= Santogold in Central Park for free. There's nothing better than living in NYC in the summer.
