Durian - The King of Fruits

Durian The King of Fruits

The king of fruits, durian is thorny, smelly and bright in color. It’s very popular in the Southeast Asia and in Malaysia, it’s no different; passerby will even stop their cars immediately if they see durian stall along the road. The thorny fruit seems hard to resist. Me? I enjoy eating it, but not really a big fan of it. Your body will feel hot after eating few of it.

Some Interesting Notes on Durian:

  • Emit a distinctive odor (some considered it offensive)
  • Durian is banned from certain hotels and public transportation in Southeast Asia
  • To reduce the smell of durian in your car or house, people usually put a few slices of pandanus (pandan) leaves in their car
  • Usually after eating durian, it’s good to drink plain water in the empty durian cases to reduce your body heat
  • If you want to know whether the durian is ripe enough to eat, we easily smell at the bottom of the stem. If it emits a strong smell, than it is good enough to be consumed
  • There is a typhoon called Typhoon Durian
  • Singapore Esplanade is nicknamed ‘The Durian’

Durian Dishes:

There are few Malaysian dishes can be made from durian fruit such as:

  • Sweet edibles candy such as dodol
  • Flavored durian food such as ice cream, milkshakes and even moon cakes
  • Pulut durian – glutinous rice steamed with coconut milk
  • Fermented durian can also be eaten as a side dish and is called tempoyak

Oh and check this beautiful pictures of durian in Faisal Admar site!

There you go. Have you tested durian before? Do you enjoy it?

Urbaners in the SUPER Market

Chickens in the supermarket
Last weekend, my friends and I organized a barbecue at my lecturer’s house. We prepared everything from buying the raw chickens, marinating it and set them on fire, literally. Anyway, this was the first time I bought these stuffs myself. For those who knew me, I never ever cook anything in my life. Never touch the raw chicken, rarely went to the market and not really into those fishy kind of smell. Well, this time I did all that!

Not that I don’t like to cook, but I don’t have any necessity to do so. I was raised in an all boys family, with the only female figure in the house is my mother. Oh and the frequently keep changing maid. The situation do not changed when I am staying in the college since I am not allowed to cook inside the residential area. Nevertheless, I took this chance to try my hand on cooking! Yeah, I know, barbecuing is not really a cooking, but it’s a good start right? :) Oh yeah, hopefully one day I will be like Julie and Julia too!

There result was I gained 2 kilograms after the barbecue! Haha. No pictures of me cooking though. I am planning to sell it to the Daily Mail. Hah.

Fishes in the supermarket
By the way, we bought all our food from supermarket (Carrefour, Tesco Extra and Jusco). These supermarkets are so convenience, I almost forgot that the wet market is still exists. Although some of the goods here are not that fresh compared to the ‘conventional’ market, it has gained rapid reputation among the urbaners.

Advantages:
  • One stop centre
  • Generally clean (even has sink with soup or sanitizer)
  • Located near the residential areas
  • Varieties of supermarkets are available
  • Imported food

Disadvantages:
  • Not that fresh
  • More expensive

Meat in the supermarket
Variety of choices
So, what is your choice? Do you prefer these modern supermarkets or the old faithful wet market? Give me a holla! Happy weekend guys!

Bon Appetite!

Great Food
Picture was taken from the Internet

I just finished watching one of the most heartwarming movies I ever watched. Frankly to say, I just come to an end of one heck of movie marathon. After finally submitted one third of my design project today, I continue to watch The Time Traveler’s Wife from the night before, went out and watched Spy Next Door and back to my room and carry on with Julie and Julia. Time Traveler’s Wife was amazing, Spy Next Door was super cute filled with light comedy here and there, but the later film left me with the most mind-boggling impact, I felt in love with Julie and Julia.

The story was about two of the most important things in my life right now; food and blogging. Honestly, I never cook in my twenty two years of life before. The only thing I know is to top almost every food that I eat by melted cheese and lots of black pepper. The only recipe I know is to put slices of cheese on the top of already cooked chicken nuggets, melted it by microwave oven, and tops it with sprinkles of black peppers and lime juice. Unhealthy that might sound, I love it.

I always treat dinner as the most essential meal of the day. It is the time where we could socialize with our family and friends, enjoy the good meal and share the boring things that had happen in our life with the close one. My family always makes time for a dinner. You should too.

Before I ending this short post, let share with us your favorite food and the most savoring meal of the day. Do you enjoy your dinner as much as I do? Bon Appetite!

Malaysia is Not So Prosperous After All

Prosperity Burger
Last night, I heard a sad story about one boy who was given RM5 from his father who’s waiting on their old bike outside Secret Recipe restaurant in Terenganu. The boy was so happy and literally jumping on his feet while choosing one of the deliciously looking cakes there. But when it’s time to pay for the cake, it turned out that none of the cakes there are worth less than RM6.50. Trying to restrain his urges to cry, he went back to his old father and they sadly cycling back home.

I instantly stop talking and ate my RM4.50 McFlurry Mudpie silently for two minutes. When my friend asked why I’m so quiet, I answered, “I am trying to hold back my tears and sweat because this RM11.88 (not including tax) Prosperity burger is so spicy”. I lied.
