The Polar Dream - The Polar Dream EP (2009)

I know, I know... I'm a little late, reviewing this old EP when the five Mexicans have already released their debut album called Follow Me To The Forest, but nevertheless, this EP is worth being reviewed.

With their beautiful melodies and their very positive songs, they have managed to amaze me in a way Sigur Ros did when I first listened to their (). Not that I do want to draw a comparison here, The Polar Dream do not sound like Sigur Ros, they have a very unique sound. They do use the same instruments (Do I hear a Glockenspiel or a Xylophone here and there?), but The Polar Dream create a rock oriented sound, which I find is one of a kind.

Interested? If yes, download it and if you like it, I urge you to support these guys and buy their debut album.

Klassik trifft auf Avant-Garde

Maudlin of the Well brauche ich wohl keinem Begeisterten der experimentellen Musik mehr vorzustellen. Für die, die trotzdem noch nie etwas davon gehört haben, hier eine kleine Biografie: Maudlin of the Well wurde 1996 gegründet und brachte bis zum Jahre 2001 drei offizielle Releases auf den Markt. Jetzt sind die Amerikaner aus Boston wieder zurück! Die Reunion Maudlin Of The Wells ist allerdings eine Geschichte für sich: 87 Fans erklärten sich bereit, Geld für die Produktion eines Reunion-Albums zu spenden und so sahen sich die Amis verpflichtet, dieses neue Werk aufzunehmen.

Die erste Veröffentlichung nach 8 Jahren unterscheidet sich in mehreren Belangen deutlich von den Vorgängern: 1. hebt sich das neue Album Part The Second stilistisch stark von den alten Alben ab und 2. ist das Album frei als Download erhältlich! Der Sound steht 2009 auf noch experimentelleren Beinen und kommt mehrheitlich vom progressiven Metal weg. Die Avant-Garde steht hierbei noch mehr im Vordergrund und wird durch neoklassische Elemente und Progressive Rock ergänzt.

Part The Second ist eines der originellsten Alben, das ich je gehört habe: Diesem avant-gardistisch spacigen Sound haftet etwas romantisches an, etwas klassisches und etwas, das mehr Wiedererkennungswert hat als die Stimme von Motörheads Lemmy, auch wenn dieser Vergleich vielleicht stilistisch nicht gerade einwandfrei ist. Der Sound ist definitiv nicht vorhersehbar und befindet sich oftmals zwischen einem musikgeschichtlichen Querschnitt von Avant-Garde, Prog Rock/Art Rock, Post-Rock und Klassik.

Wunderschönes Album, einwandfreie Kompositionen und Wiederkennungswert hoch 10!

Classical music meets avant-garde

I guess I don't need to introduce Maudlin Of The Well because most lovers of experimental music do already know them. For those ones who don't, here's a short biography: Maudlin Of The Well were founded in 1996 and released three official recordings until 2001. Now, the three Americans from Boston are back! The reunion of Maudlin Of The Well is unique: 87 fans donated for the recording of a new album and so, Maudlin Of The Well felt bound to create this new release.

The first release after 8 years is clearly different to the forerunners: 1. the new album is stylistically very different to the others and 2. the album is available as a free download! The sound in 2009 is even more experimental and distances from the progressive metal elements. In the foreground is now the avant-gardistic sound that is completed by elements of classical music and progressive rock.

Part The Second is one of the most original albums I've ever heard: This avant-gardistic, spacy sound is completed by something romantical, something classical and something, that has more recognation value than the voice of Motörhead's Lemmy, although this comparison is not very representative. The sound is definitely not predictable and moves between a music-historical section of avant-garde, prog rock/art rock, post-rock and classical music.

Wonderful album, perfect compositions and recognition value high 10!

Anoroc - Antigone (2007)

Wer sich mit dieser Musikrichtung besser auskennt wird sich nicht schwer tun Anoroc zu schubladisieren. Da ich in diese Richtung leider nur wenig kenne, ist es schwer für mich sie einzuordnen. In erster Linie fallen mir aber beim Hören gewisse Züge von Dispatch, Incubus oder auch Pearl Jam auf. Das sind auch 3 Bands, die ich sehr zu schätzen weiß und die mit Gewissheit auch Einfluss auf den Sound von Anoroc hatten, haben und in Zukunft auch haben werden.

Bereits vor einigen Jahren, als ich Anoroc zum ersten Mal bei einem Band Contest in Innsbruck live erleben durfte, haben sich diese durch ihre Aufrichtigkeit der Musik gegenüber immens aus der Masse hervorgehoben - ein Gefühl, das auch diese CD zu vermitteln versucht. Die professionelle Aufnahme, die sich auf dem Debüt findet, überzeugt bereits beim ersten Einlegen der CD in den Player. Die Texte sind gut überlegt und noch besser gesungen, sehr gute Arrangements und funkige Gitarren. Genau die richtige Abwechslung zum fordernden Sound, der sonst auf diesem Blog vorgestellt wird.

Someone who is well versed with this genre won’t have difficulties to classify Anoroc. But it’s really hard for me to relate to this music because I know only a few bands like this. First and foremost my attention is attracted by certain lineaments from bands like Dispatch, Incubus and also Pearl Jam. Three bands I really appreciate and had (and will continue to have) a bearing on the sound of Anoroc for sure.

A few years ago I saw Anoroc the first time at a band-contest in Innsbruck. They were highlighting themselves out of the crowd with their honesty of making music. A feeling that also their debut CD knows to interfere. The professional production of Antigone makes sure to excite from the very first moment. The lyrics are deliberate and very well performed, excellent arrangements and funky guitars. The perfect alternative to the quite demanding your introduced to here elsewise.

David Beans - The Loss and Recovery (EP) (2008)

Die Reise in das Königreich der Empfindung

Die Mission einer jeden Band ist es, die Emotionen des Hörers zu wecken. Zu oft drückt man die Play-Taste und erwartet Großartiges, blickt jenen Momenten entgegen, die unser Innerstes berühren - doch sie bleiben leider immer wieder aus. Wenn sich aber David Beans aus Cleveland, Ohio in sein Studion begibt, um über 2 Jahre hinweg The Loss and Recovery aufzunehmen, spürt man, mit welcher grenzenlosen Leidenschaft diese EP produziert worden ist.

Loss.

Bereits in den ersten angespannten Sekunden nimmt mich die 11-jährige Tailor Marie an ihre Hand, begleitet mich tapfer durch eine nebelverhangene Klanglandschaft aus Liebe, Hass, Hoffnung und Verzweiflung. Das Königreich der Empfindung. Der hier herrschende, scheinbar niemals enden wollende Regen, wird Schritt für Schritt von Geigen und bedächtigem Klavier verdrängt, während sich die wohlig zarte Hand aus der meinen löst und mit ihr meine ganze Kraft verschwinden lässt. Einsam und verlassen bin ich gezwungen dem Herzschlag in meiner Brust zu lauschen, weiche erst erschrocken zurück, als mich Unheil bringende Paukenschläge umzingeln, jeder Ausweg versperrt ist und die Seele mit dem unauslöschbaren Mal der Resignation gekennzeichnet ist.

Recovery.

Doch vorläufig scheint die Genesung ein Leichtes zu sein. Vom wunderbaren Aufwind der Drums und des Gesangs getragen, schwebe ich durch eine Welt der Einheitlichkeit, einer Welt der Genügsamkeit, um kurz darauf wieder von den Gegensätzlichkeiten, die sich auf dieser EP manifestieren, in den Sog der Verzweiflung gezogen zu werden.

Loss.

Dort angekommen, in einem Intermezzo, das vom niedergeschlagenen Klavier getragen wird, schenke ich einem Telefonat voll Kummer und Trauer Gehör und begreife, was es heißt sämtlichen Mut verloren zu haben. Doch ein afrikanisches Sprichwort besagt, was die Ebbe nimmt, bringt die Flut wieder und so raffe ich mich auf, die letzten Schritte meiner Reise zu bestreiten.

Recovery.

Spielende Kinder, aufrichtende Melodien und elektronisches Schlagzeug lotsen mich wieder zurück zu Tailor Marie, die mich bereits sehnsüchtig erwartet. Sie ist mittlerweile von Türmen aus Synthesizern umgeben, die Anthony Gonzales von M83 nicht besser in dieser Landschaft errichten hätte können. There is always hope, verabschiedet sich das Mädchen dann, lässt mich erneut alleine, doch bin ich dieses Mal nicht hoffnungslos verloren, ich bin endgültig wieder auf meine Beine gekommen.

The journey into the realm of sentiment

It is every band's mission to spark the listener's emotions. Too often the play-button is pressed, in expectance of something great, awaiting the moments which touch our innermost feelings - however, they unfortunately fail to appear ever anon. But when David Beans from Cleveland, Ohio betakes himself into his studio to record The Loss and Recovery for two years, you feel the unlimited passion this EP is produced with.

Loss.

In the first fierce seconds already, 11-year old Tailor Marie takes my hand, accompanies me bravely through a befogged soundscape of love, hate, hope and desperation. The realm of sentiment. Here, the prevalent, never-ending rain is replaced by violings and deliberate piano gradually, while the comforting, tender hand loosens itself from mine, and takes all my strength with it. Lonely and abandoned I am forced to listen to the heartbeat in my chest, not backing off until direful drumbeats surround me, the last way out is barricaded and the soul is branded with the inerasable mark of resignation.

Recovery.

But for the moment, recovery seems an easy thing to achieve. Carried by the wonderful updraft of the drums and vocals, I'm floating through a world of unity, a world of frugality, just to be drawn into the maelstrom by the polarities that are manifested on this EP a few moments later.

Loss.

Having arrived there, in an interlude, carried by the downhearted piano, I tune my ears to a telephone conversation full of grief and mourning and I realize what it means to lose all of your courage. But there's an African saying that goes: what the low tide takes, the high tide will bring again and so I pull myself together to get on the last steps of my journey.

Recovery.

Playing childrend, uplifting melodies and electronic drums guide my way back to Tailor Marie, who is anticapting me longingly. By now, she is surrounded by towers of synthesizers, which M83's Anthony Gonzales could not have put up better in this landscape. There is always hope, she bids farewell, leaving me alone once again, but this time I'm not hopelessly lost, I have finally recovered.

Driveby – Progressing Decay (2007)

Ich muss zugeben, ich habe mir hiermit etwas schwer getan, deswegen verging auch mehr Zeit, als ich zuerst dachte, um eine Rezension zu verfassen. Dass es nicht allzu leicht war hatte seinen Grund, nämlich das Debut der Band Driveby aus Tirol, namens „Progressing Decay“. Was sie hier mit ihrem ersten Album vom Stapel lassen benötigt die volle Aufmerksamkeitsspanne des Hörers.
Der relaxte Beginn mit „Indepted“ ermöglicht einen guten Einstieg, leicht vertrackte Rhythmik paart sich mit entspanntem Riffing und angenehmen Gesang. So weit so gut. Schon beim zweiten Track „What You Desurf“ fällt eines sofort auf: Die Stimme vom Sänger bleibt mehr oder weniger unverändert, was sich durch die gesamte Albumlänge zieht. Somit sind wir auch schon beim ersten und einzigen Kritikpunkt angelangt: Ich finde den Gesang etwas zu monoton. Das mag jetzt vielleicht schlimmer klingen, als es tatsächlich ist. Ich glaube nur, dass er viel mehr Potential hat, als er es hier zeigt. Ihre musikalische Experimentierfreudigkeit sollte sich in Zukunft auch auf die Vocals niederschlagen, etwas mehr Abwechslung und ein paar Emotionen mehr und fertig ist der wohltuende Soundcocktail. Ein klares Highlight des Albums stellt für mich „Cave In“ dar. Harte Gitarrenriffs im Intro, denen verspielte Melodien im Anschluss und ein teilweise abgehackter, fast schon psychotischer Gesang folgen. Tolle Ideen wirklich gut umgesetzt und auch die beste Leistung vom Sänger! Auch die restlichen drei Songs können vollends überzeugen. „Acceptends“ wartet mit schönem Klavierspiel auf, „Forced to Play“ bietet gegen Ende ein reggae-mäßiges Intermezzo und „Nothing's For Free” groovt gnadenlos nach vorne los, da muss man einfach mitgehen. Für allerlei Überraschungen ist also gesorgt.
Somit ist dieses Album jedem Fan von ansprechender, leicht progressiver Musik zu empfehlen, auch wenn es beim Gesang ein paar Abzüge in der Gesamtwertung gibt. Ich bin schon auf ihr nächstes Werk gespannt. Beide Daumen nach oben!
