An indonesian downtempo, hardcore, post metal mixture? Got me with that one. With their Demo EP Ghaust want to present themselves and their powerful music. The sound is hard to define just like you could guess because of the genres. Everybody sees the conflict between downtempo – the quite sedate, billowing fat man from the woods – and hardcore – the aggressive, energetic, skinny vegan form the suburbs. But after the first sounds you will understand why these labels make sense. Not fast, but not slow Ghaust are starting their work. Introducing, fast and metallike drum solos are normalised by restraining guitarriffs. Sadly this is a weak spot of the band. To many times while listening the – with 3 songs and 16.07 minutes quite short – EP you wish that somebody would take off the reins of this snorting stallion and let it go. Because of this regimentation of their own momentum a lot of riffs seem to be a little thin although you feel that there is a huge energy hiding in the dark. The drumming brakes away from this. Often it knows how to surprise and performs extremely well. Here you can hear the “foreign” influence. You simply can hear that Ghaust are not another rolling train from the US or the UK but something different from a country we might know as much about as an Indonesian knows about Bavarian traditions. This is very refreshing. Sadly the rest of the band doesn`t follow this road. The sound can be described as solid. But there`s always something missing, to make this sound outstanding – what this band without doubt carries within. To be fair it has to be mentioned that the sound quality influences this impression. Often you`re missing the drive behind the sound and sometimes you can hear that the microphones couldn`t handle it. I think a recording of higher quality would add a lot of drive which is now missing.
To come to an end: An interesting debut of a band which I put high expectations in among the next years, forasmuch as they manage to free themselves from their austerity muzzle to kick ass.
