4. You're So Right

Ann Beattie

Tonight work was slow because Hanakkuh started at sundown. I found the NYTimes Book Review, and was pleased to read a review of the new collection The New Yorker Stories by Ann Beattie.

If anyone knows me then they probably already know of my long obsession and revisitation of the best short story ever written (by Beattie, of course) "The Burning House." Over the summer I read Beattie's novella Walks With Men, and I almost choked on the similarities between that breathless one-day read and "The Burning House." I like to think of the latter as the rough draft, though ever-so-polished, for the former.

Long story and bad attempt at lit crit cut short, I hope that someone will gift me The New Yorker Stories this Christmas, and I'd like to post an apt quote here, which sums up why I love Beattie's writing and why I feel such a strong affinity to her.

"What you learn when you read the works of the young Ann Beattie is that she loved men. She was an appreciator, a connoisseur, of men, in all their indefensible glory. Her male characters are often awful and usually irresponsible and almost always funny and touching."

If there was ever a girl that loved men in spite of everything else, well then I guess that makes 2 of us.

Petty Fest 2010

Tom Petty's 60th bday, celebrated in style with the likes of Adam Green, Nikolai Fraiture, Norah Jones, Will Forte and Jason Sudeikis, and more. John Hamm was hiding in the back, Catherine Pierce was gorgeous, and someone in the crowd kept yelling "sexy drummer" to none other than Matt Romano (looking less Guido than usual w/out his mustache.) Evan Dando sang an old fave "A Face In the Crowd" and I almost died. I recommend any Petty fan to go next year because every song kicks ass when a packed house sings with you. Best time I've had in a long time, thanks dudes.

Going to Acapulco

Thank you, Mexico, for the time of my life!

Back to NYC. Yesterday evening I wanted to cry into my pillow but had to work the graveyard shift. But no matter. Guess which classic NYC goon I spoke to on the phone at 5 in the morning. I'll give you a hint. Homeboy ordered large fries, chicken tenders, apple pie and vanilla ice cream, 2 large water bottles and a Diet Coke because he's so, so tall, and he must still be growing. Ugh, I guess coming back to reality ain't so bad!

Not ready to turn back yet.

LIBRA [September 23–October 22] Metaphorically speaking, you have recently begun crossing the water in a dream boat that has a small leak. If you keep going, it's possible you will reach the far side before sinking. But that's uncertain. And even if you were able to remain afloat the entire way, the shakiness of the situation would probably fill you with anxiety. My suggestion, then, is to head back to where you started and fix the leak.

Thanks, Rob Brezsny.

time is on my side

February, with its snowstorms and Valentines' Day gloom, may be raging (I fell flat on my ass thanks to Greenpoint ice on the way home tonight), but summer creeps up slowly, and sometimes with so much promise and vibrating-phone-in-my-stomach desirable anxiousness that I can find it tough to keep my mind on the moment at hand. The overwhelming yearning for hot sun and hotter bodies can put a damper on the daily routine in NYC at this stage in the year's game. But, I just kick back with a Corona, turn up the volume on Mick's cocksure waaaah-waaaaaah vocals and scream, "Tiiiiiiiiiiime is on my side, yes it is!"

Because it is, pendejos. It is.

JANUARY 14, TERMINAL FIVE

After 3.5 long horrible years of no Julian, 2010 will start with a bang! Buy your tickets for his Terminal 5 show. Yes, the venue sucks. Yes, they allow children inside. Yes, this is not The Strokes. But I haven't felt this much excitement in a long time. Thank you, Ticketmaster and American Express. You have made my day.

The Strokes: Isle of Wight 2010

The Strokes will perform at the Isle of Wight festival in England on June 12, 2010. Pitchfork broke the news this morning, and Johnsina told me at work where I immediately flushed to the color of a tomato and started jumping around like a coneja for joy!

You know what this means, right? Album #4 is totally on, and all 5 Strokes will be together on the SAME STAGE for the 1st time since October, 2006... Albany seems like a lifetime ago. Let's hope for a Spring/Summer 2010 release and NYC tour dates, please please please. Make it happen, Ryan Gentles.

Jazzy, I have got. To get. A Bike.

Everyone, please take a little 10 minute break today to rendezvous with one of my best friends, Jazzy JJ Twitter Craze (known to the masses as John Jannuzzi) on Paper Mag's blog. Paper loved Jazzy's awesome blog TEXTBOOK so much that they decided to interview him about his fabulous life. And you know what I say to that? Hands down, balls to the wall!

a crack pot idea

It's no secret that I'm probably one of the biggest Dennis Hopper enthusiasts on the planet. On Wednesday I finally went to Tony Shafrazi Gallery to see the Hopper exhibit Signs of the Times. I felt like I was there for 10 minutes, but I stayed for over an hour and a half. Shafrazi's a huge gallery, and most of the wall space is devoted to photos that Hopper took from 1961-67. When you get all the images from the scenes of his amazing experiences (just in the 60's!) into one room-- civil rights marches, Warhol's factory, the beginnings of Pop Art, Taos NM, Hollywood, etc.-- the quintessentially American status of Dennis Hopper's icon-ship becomes manifestly apparent.

And then when you go into the long 3-room chamber of film clips, forget about it. They've got clips from virtually every reel of film his face has been exposed on, even the super rare documentary The American Dreamer, in which drugged-out Hopper struggles to edit his best and most honestly experimental work The Last Movie.

So yeah, it was basically just a cavern of awesomeness that I could house up in until the show's end. My Hopper worship just multiplied about 500 times, and I'm happy because this guy doesn't get enough credit for his incredible career and production of art work in multiple genres. His eye's phenomenal, from collecting art to creating it to making the films that take my soul (and many others) and put them into visuals and words that are so heartbreakingly beautiful you just wanna blow yourself up with dynamite! (Yeah, he did that and SURVIVED!)

And survival's what it comes down to for me when I think about Dennis Hopper. He started out as a golden boy actor straight from the farms of Kansas. Hello, American Dream! He made it in Hollywood until he got too creative and sure of his own ideas and was blacklisted from film for rebelling against his director. Then he got creative, played around with Art's elite, roamed the country, made Easy Rider, and fell off the deep end from alcohol and drug abuse. He made a masterpiece that won the Venice Film Festival (THE LAST MOVIE) and went bat-shit crazy in Taos, NM. But he kept film in his life, and film kept him alive. He pushed life to the absolute limits, suffered and destroyed because of that craving for the edge of the abyss, but the most American thing about Hopper is that he came BACK from that. He realized the American Dream is the most major mythic lie (and stubbornly sought goal) in our culture, said fuck it and did his own thing, but then reintegrated himself back in the artistic society on his own terms.
