Eine gehörige Portion Verrücktheit, Inspiration von Leuten wie Tim Hecker und ein Hang zu Zelda™; wozu das führt zeigt uns Justin Kwapich mit seinem Psychedelic / Ambient Mix. Der US Amerikaner aus Ohio kreiert Klangwelten mit meist sphärischen Ausmaßen die zeitweise ins „Gehirn-Karusell“ abdriften. Teils bringt er den Hörer mit ausgefallenen Wechseln, verstörenden Zwischengeräuschen und psychedelischen Elementen fast an seine Grenzen. Jedoch vergisst er dabei nie, auch für Ruhepole und hin und wieder die Ein oder Andere klare Struktur zu sorgen. Auch ein bisschen Humor vermisst man nicht in seinen Werken. So wirft er sparsam aber sehr geschickt Melodien ein die einen schon fast ein bisschen schmunzeln lassen. Als Zelda-Liebhaber fällt einem auch sofort auf, dass die Stücke teils an die Klänge aus der Spielserie erinnern. Nicht, dass er teile kopiert sondern er schafft eigene Melodien die den Stil der grenzgenialen Zelda-Musik nachahmen. Auch sonst fühlt man sich gelegentlich an alte Nintendo™ oder PC Spiele erinnert. Nicht untypisch für Ambient führen die Lieder einen zum teil auf eine Weltraumreise. Dies ist natürlich bedingt durch die spaceigen und psychedelischen Klänge, nicht außergewöhnlich aber sehr gut umgesetzt. Justin schreibt auf seiner Myspace™ Seite selbst „sein Gehirn ist explodiert und hat sich in Musik verwandelt“. Diese Aussage kann man nach dem Hören uneingeschränkt bestätigen. Er fordert den Hörer bewusst heraus, will ihn immer weiter in Abgründe treiben um dann doch noch einen Rettungsanker zu liefern. Für erprobte Ambient Hörer ist diese Scheibe wohl ein wahrer Genuss. Besonders brillant fand ich das - sich immer mehr verstimmende – Klavier bei „At the Bottom of a Top Hat“, das eine eingängige Melodie spielt, sich immer mehr in Richtung waberndem Synthesizer verändert und schließlich von anderen Synths verschluckt wird, um dann wieder in seiner ursprünglichen Form zurückzukehren. Mit „The Peace in Apocalypse“ liefert Justin Kwapich ein durchweg gutes Ambient Werk ab, das häufig überrascht und den Hörer stets fordert. ©tbaoth

A lot of craziness, inspiration by people like e.g. Tim Hecker and an addiction to Zelda™; on which path this combination ends is shown by Justin Kwapich with his Psychedelic / Ambient mixture. The US American from Ohio is creating soundscapes with often spherical dimensions which at times end in – what I call – “brain whirligig”. Partly he`s pushing the listener to the limit with his extraordinary changes, the unsettled noises and the psychedelic elements. But he never forgets to offer a place to rest and from time to time he disburdens the songs with a bright structure. Also a little sense of humor isn`t missing in his creations. Thrifty but very adept he adds melodies, bringing a smile onto your face. As Zelda™ fan you`ll quick recognize the affinity to the game series. Not that he copies pieces of it - he creates his own melodies which imitate the style of the genius Zelda™ music. Generally you feel remembered of good old Nintendo™ or PC games. Not surprising for an ambient record the songs send you on a space trip from time to time. Due to the psychedelic and spherical sounds nothing surprising but involved into the songs in an excellent way. Justin is writing “His Brain exploded and transformed into music” on his Myspace™ site. This statement is absolute traceable. Knowingly Justin challenges the listener, is trying to push him more and more into depths and finally offers the longed for sheet anchor. For proven ambient fans this record is an outstanding pleasure. The most brilliant part – in my opinion – is the piano of the song “At the bottom of a Top Hat”, which is constantly putting out of tune and changes into a billowing synthesizer, finally is swallowed by noise to return in his original form. “The Peace in Apocalypse” is an at large very good piece of ambient music, which keeps on surprising and challenging the listener.
