Snyder’s First Six Months: Killing Michigan Jobs
![]() |
I needz to be recall |
From Michigan Democratic Party
LANSING – Six months into his tenure, Governor Rick Snyder has failed to sign one piece of legislation that helps to create jobs. After promising on the campaign trail and in his inaugural address to create jobs, Snyder’s policies have actually cost Michigan jobs.
“We’ve seen nothing from this Governor in six months except the elimination of jobs in Michigan.” Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer said. “Whether it’s the repeal of item pricing, the cuts to film incentives, or his budget which is causing the layoffs of thousands of teachers, police, firefighters, and other public employees – Snyder has proven that all he knows how to do in office is kill jobs.”
“Just this past week we’ve seen even more jobs leave the state,” added Brewer. “A solar technology company in Brighton is leaving Michigan and taking jobs to Indiana. It joins several other companies who have left Michigan or created jobs elsewhere since Snyder became Governor. In six months, Snyder has broken his promise to create jobs. That’s not ‘reinventing’ Michigan. That’s ruining Michigan.”
Motor City Liberal Comment: What's that sound coming from the Michigan right wing blog sphere? It's the sound of crickets because they can't defend ONE damn thing this governor and that corrupt Republican super majority in Lansing are doing.

Spirit Airlines: $5 To Print Boarding Passes
But only if their clerk prints them for you at the airport.
Low-fare carrier Spirit Airlines drew gasps last year when it became the first U.S. airline to charge passengers for bringing carry-on bags aboard. On Tuesday, the proponent of fees for nearly everything airborne unveiled another U.S. first: Passengers who have boarding passes printed by a Spirit check-in agent will be charged $5 each for each nonstop flight. The Miramar, Fla., carrier said fliers can avoid forking over a five spot by checking in online and printing their own boarding passes. The new fee, which started Tuesday, applies to all flights booked for travel on or after Nov. 1.Spirit also charges $20-$35 to use the overhead bin for a carry-on.

Conservative Media Pick Theme For GOP's 2012 Campaign: Obama "Made [The Economy] Worse"
From Media Matters
Right-wing media have seized on a line from a Peggy Noonan column -- "he made it worse" -- and have begun repeating the false message that President Obama's policies have worsened the economy. In reality, there is broad agreement among economists that the stimulus boosted growth and employment, and most of the deficit is attributable to Bush policies and the recession.
Noonan: "Four Words: He Made It Worse"
Noonan: Obama Decisions Worsened "Financial Collapse, Deficits, and Debt." From Peggy Noonan's June 3 column in The Wall Street Journal:
Barack Obama is different, not a political practitioner, really, but something else, and not a warm-blooded animal but a cool, chill character, a fish who sits deep in the tank and stares, stilly, at the other fish.
He doesn't know how to confuse his foes with "outreach," with phone calls, jokes, affection. He doesn't leave them saying, as Reagan did, "I just can't help it, I like the guy." And because he can't confuse them or reach them they more readily coalesce around their own explanation of him: socialist, destroyer.
This isn't good, and has had an impact on the president's contacts with Republicans. And it's added an edge to an emerging campaign theme among them. Two years ago I wrote of Clare Booth Luce's observation that all presidents have a sentence: "He fought to hold the union together and end slavery." "He brought America through economic collapse and a world war." You didn't have to be told it was Lincoln, or FDR. I said that Mr. Obama didn't understand his sentence. But Republicans now think they know it.
Four words: He made it worse.
Obama inherited financial collapse, deficits and debt. He inherited a broken political culture. These things weren't his fault. But through his decisions, he made them all worse. [The Wall Street Journal, 6/3/11]
National Review: Noonan "Finds The Campaign Theme"
National Review's Ponnuru Titles Blog Post "Peggy Noonan Finds The Campaign Theme." The day Noonan's column was published, National Review senior editor Ramesh Ponnuru posted an entry to the National Review Online blog The Corner that excerpted from the column and declared that she had found the campaign theme. [National Review Online, The Corner, 6/3/11]
Fox Figures Hammer Home False Message That Obama "Made It Worse"
Doocy Touts Noonan's Claim In "Great Editorial": "It Comes Down To Four Words: 'He Made It Worse.' " From the June 6 edition of Fox News' Fox & Friends:
STEVE DOOCY (co-host): You know what, Gretch? There was a great editorial by Peggy Noonan in The Wall Street Journal over the weekend. And what she --
BRIAN KILMEADE (co-host): From Massapequa. But go ahead.
DOOCY: That's right. Her sister lives in my town.
KILMEADE: But I deserve credit for that somehow.
DOOCY: Anyway, what she wrote was, you know, the president does have a lousy economy on his hands right now, and it was lousy when he took over. But he was able to make a bunch of decisions on which way to turn the ship. And she says the decisions he made got us where we are today. And she says it comes down to four words: "He made it worse." And when you think about it, we had all those different arsenal tools in Ben Bernanke's toolbox. We did what the president wanted. He made it worse, according to Peggy Noonan. [Fox News, Fox & Friends, 6/6/11]
Charles Krauthammer: "I Think You Can Argue Strongly That The Obama Administration Made It Worse." From the June 7 edition of Fox News' Special Report with Bret Baier:
KRAUTHAMMER: Look, I don't think it's a communication problem. This is not Cool Hand Luke. This is a reality problem. No matter what Obama said, no matter how he spun it. If he used the phrase "a bump in the road" or a blip or whatever, it wouldn't make any difference in the world. It's the fact that we have historically high unemployment, and it is staying there.
With Reagan, you had a really deep recession like the one that we have just had, but we had this remarkable snap back. We had 6, 7 percent growth. Even though he had high unemployment on Election Day in 1984, everybody had a sense that we were in recovery, and you could, with a straight face, run an ad saying, "It's morning in America." You can't now. It's dusk in America. It's evening in America. It's midnight in America. But it's not morning in America. That's why no matter what he says, it's not going to make any difference.
And I think you can argue strongly that the Obama administration made it worse. In the midterm election last year, the idea that Republicans ran on was that he's a left liberal. What they're going to run on in 2012 is he's a failure. He tried all of this stuff. He promised us we'd get improvement, and it hasn't worked. It was a huge Keynesian experiment, and it hasn't panned out. [Fox News, Special Report with Bret Baier, 6/7/11]
Bill O'Reilly: To Say "Obama Administration Has Not Made" Economy Worse Is "To Just Ignore The Statistics." From the June 7 edition of Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor:
O'REILLY: Here's the problem with that, with your analysis. The private sector is sitting on a tremendous amount of money, a trillion dollars, easy. OK? The banks aren't lending it. They're not giving it out. You go to a bank, very hard to get a mortgage, very hard to start up a business. The reason is they don't have any confidence in Barack Obama. Because he's breaking the bank with the entitlement spending. Now, that includes Medicare, that includes Medicaid and all of that. The banks are going, "You know what? We don't have confidence in this guy. We think it's a nanny state coming, and if he gets re-elected, it's going to be worse." So they're sitting on the money.
ALAN COLMES (Fox News Radio host): How do you know it's about Obama versus the economy? Why is this specific to Obama, if the economy has not done well because the Republicans drove it into the --
O'REILLY: Because he's driving the policy.
COLMES: Thank God we had the stimulus we had and helped save the auto industry. And we need a bigger stimulus.
O'REILLY: You're missing the point. If a Republican says, "I'm going to cut taxes," instead of Obama saying, "I'm going to raise them," the economy -- the private sector is going to cheer that.
COLMES: It didn't work for Bush. Where were the jobs? Bush cut the -- we paid the --
O'REILLY: You just heard Schieffer say 5 percent versus 9 percent.
COLMES: You know why? Because it's where we're coming from. We're coming off a terrible recession, and so right now, 8 percent looks really good.
O'REILLY: The Obama administration's made all of it worse.
COLMES: No, they didn't make it worse.
O'REILLY: Yes, they did.
COLMES: They would have made it better if we had a bigger stimulus.
O'REILLY: They would have. They would have.
COLMES: And imagine what the Republicans would be saying if the auto industry were not saved and hundreds of thousands of jobs were gone. They'd be going crazy. They'd be going crazy.
O'REILLY: I was OK with the auto industry, but for you to sit there and say the Obama administration has not made it worse --
COLMES: They made it better.
O'REILLY: -- is for you to just ignore the statistics. [Fox News, The O'Reilly Factor, 6/7/11]
Monica Crowley: "Barack Obama Took A Bad Situation And Made It A Thousand Times Worse." From the June 7 edition of The O'Reilly Factor:
CROWLEY: In the fall of 2008, you had a financial crisis. That crisis then spread like a contagion to other aspects of the economy. Barack Obama took a bad situation and made it a thousand times worse with a massive expansion of government, with unprecedented spending -- as you point out -- record-breaking deficits and debt, which hangs like a suffocating overhang over this economy. And then regulations, new requirements like ObamaCare, where businesses -- small, medium, and large -- have no idea what it's going to cost them to hire an employee tomorrow.
O'REILLY: That's right. She's right. [Fox News, The O'Reilly Factor, 6/7/11]
Analyses Agree: Stimulus Curbed Unemployment And Boosted Growth, And Most Debt Is Attributable to Bush Policies And Economic Downturn
Independent And Private Analysts: Stimulus Significantly Raised Employment. As Media Mattershas previously documented, many analysts confirmed that the stimulus significantly raised employment. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimated that the stimulus increased the number of people employed, as of the second quarter of FY2010, by "between 1.4 million and 3.3 million." Moody's Economy.com estimated it would have created 1.9 million jobs by 2010. [Media Matters,9/26/10]
Economists: "The Effects Of The Fiscal Stimulus" On Economy "Appear Very Substantial."Economists also agreed that the stimulus was effective. A March 2010 study in The Wall Street Journalfound that 70 percent of economists surveyed said the stimulus "boosted growth and mitigated job losses." ABC News reported on February 18, 2010, that most of the economists on its panel thought the economy "would be worse today without the big aid package." And a February 2010 survey of 203 members of the National Association for Business Economics (NABE) found that "[e]ighty-three percent believe that GDP is currently higher than it would have been without the 2009 stimulus package (ARRA)." [Media Matters, 9/26/10]
Wash. Post Graphic Shows Bush Tax Cuts And Iraq Wars Contributed Most To Current Deficit. From a June 4 post on The Washington Post blog PostPolitics:
In the debate over the nation's rising debt, rhetoric trumps reality. In January 2001, the U.S. budget was balanced for the first time in decades and the Congressional Budget Office was forecasting surpluses totaling $5.6 trillion by 2011. A decade later, the national debt is larger, as a percentage of the economy, than at any time in U.S. history except for the period shortly after World War II.
[...]
In fact, 75 percent of the members currently serving in Congress voted for at least one -- and in most cases more than one -- of three policies that contributed to fully one-third of the $12.7 trillion swing from projected surpluses to real debt: President George W. Bush's 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, funding for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and President Obama's 2009 stimulus bill.
The post also included the following graphic illustrating the CBO's estimates on how much Bush's tax cuts, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the 2009 stimulus contributed to the current debt:

[The Washington Post, 6/4/11]
CBPP: "[V]irtually The Entire Deficit Over The Next Ten Years" Due To Bush Policies, Economic Downturn." The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) published an analysis of federal deficits in December 2009, which was updated on June 28, 2010, titled, "Critics Still Wrong on What's Driving Deficits in Coming Years: Economic Downturn, Financial Rescues, and Bush-Era Policies Drive the Numbers." The report noted:
Some critics continue to assert that President George W. Bush's policies bear little responsibility for the deficits the nation faces over the coming decade -- that, instead, the new policies of President Barack Obama and the 111th Congress are to blame. Most recently, a Heritage Foundation paper downplayed the role of Bush-era policies (for more on that paper, see p. 4). Nevertheless, the fact remains: Together with the economic downturn, the Bush tax cuts and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq explain virtually the entire deficit over the next ten years.
The report also graphed the effects of Bush's policies and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan on the deficit. From the report:

Slumdog Millionaire Child Actor, £1 Loo and Facebook
NEWS 1: Mohammed Ismail slapped and kicked his ten-year-old son Azharuddin in front of shocked neighbours and passers - for wanting a rest

The youngster, who played the hero of Slumdog Millionaire as a child, received a beating from Ismail Usnay, 45, apparently for disobedience. Exhausted by a chaotic welcome and a long flight from Los Angeles, he was given the day off school yesterday. But when he refused to step outside his home in the Dharavi slum in Bandra to speak to journalists, his father lashed out.‘His father went mad,’ said a witness.‘He wanted to show his son off to journalists and local people, but Azharuddin said he wanted to be left alone because he was tired.’

Hours later Ismail apologized for the attack. He said: “I was very sorry I did what I did. “I was confused and stressed by my son’s homecoming and I did not know myself for a minute. I love my boy and I am very happy to have him home.”
I wonder what will happen to Azharuddin after this – back to his slumdog life? Perhaps, that was exactly what his father thought. After all these madness that Slumdog Millionaire has created (by the way, a very very good movie indeed), what will happen to them then?
________
NEWS 2: £1 for on air loo
Its passengers already have to pay for a sandwich, a cup of tea and even to check in luggage. But the latest element of the Ryanair ‘no frills’ culture could catch some potential passengers short. They may have to pay £1 to spend a penny.
While many travelers might consider using the on-board lavatory as an occasional necessity rather than an extra, it seems the Irish budget airline’s chief executive views it as a convenient way of raising revenue.
It may sound like a ridiculous desperate way to increase the company revenue, but I bet lots of people are considering adopting this method. They just don’t speak it out loud like Ryanair. Who knows what they have charged us along with the ticket fares?
P/S: There once rumors that kedai mamak (Indian Muslim restaurants) will charged their customers for using their toilet. I wonder whether they are really charging the customers.
________
NEWS 3: Facebook users with hundreds of online 'friends' only have a handful of TRUE pals

They boast of having hundreds of friends who regularly send them messages, photos, pokes and kisses. But, in reality, members of the Facebook generation only have a handful of true friends, research shows.
The study - carried out by Facebook - found that while the average user will belong to a network of over 100 friends, they will be in regular contact with just a handful.
Like, duh. I don’t even remember the last time I actually made a decent conversation with my so called Facebook friends. I only had a bunch of my real friends and families there. I have this kind of policy: I only add people that I knew, but will not reject others who wanted to add me as their friend. In the end, I received at least 5 new add request a day. May be they think I am cool, or not.

Great Opinions, Bad Health - Ulcer & Tonsils
I was overwhelmed by the all the responds in my latest post, Change Your Lifestyle (READ THIS HOT POST HERE). I would like to elaborate a little bit more on the topic, but I am not feeling well this weekend. My tonsils are swelling like hell, a condition that been repeating for years since I was a kid. But last weekend it was getting out of hand or in doctor's term, my "tonsils are enlarged, reddened and exudate white patches of tonsillitis". And the worst of it, I don't even noticed that my tonsils were swelling. I thought my sore throat was due to my tongue and mouth ulcer, yet another symptoms I have been experienced through out the year. I could not post any of these pictures here as they are not suitable for general audience and for those who want to eat after reading this post. (Check them out through links at the end of this post - for the record, mine is not that bad as shown from those pictures and articles). Back to the post, here are some great opinions from my readers. Add them up and take part in my poll!
- "things are getting way out of limits, with the prices soaring the sky!" - Nisha

- "Reduce.. reduce.. reduce.." - e-tavasi
- "we go to work by car. after sending me to office, my hubby will park the car and use motocycle. if it rains, we switch to car again. if not raining, we go home by bike. - Mangosteenskin
- "i also turn off the engine when i need to sit in the car waiting for hubby to finish his work. but a lot of mosquito if it's already dark." - Mangosteenskin
- "... people with lavish lifestyle tend to spend their socks off to show their status by buying all those dream things for the people who can't afford it. That's why every time we wanted to spend on something, we should think hard about it." - Fishy@ike

Change Your Lifestyle

I should stop talking about myself. I was thinking about finalizing my summer holiday post when I suddenly saw a STOP sign below a lamp post in front of my house. When did they put it there? So, like a good citizen with an obligation to mother nature creation, I think I will need to postponed the post (again). Honestly, I kinda embarrassed - one of the feeling that has been disappearing for the past few years, for talking about myself to much. Plus, people will think that I am a self centered bastard who like to brag (not that I care much about what people said). Nevertheless, taking the cue, I will talk about more important matter in order to save the world (I could feel the world is shaking when I say that phrase).
The global price of oil already hit a time high with $139 per barrel last Friday. I check on this site to take a look at today's price and what a surprise! I was greeted with a WELCOME! The last word you want to associate with oil price. Anyway, the price is $132.90 today and I left the site without looking for "Good Bye and Have A Nice Day". The new oil price in Malaysia is RM2.70 per liter (increased by 40%) and I sure all around the world, the price is increase too. And they even forecast that the global oil price will be double ($250) in the near future. Consistently, other goods prices will be up too unless the government do something. Of course, waiting for the government to take action is simply a long and painful wait, so I decided to list up what you could do to reduce the burden of the price war. Viewer Discretion Advised. This May Not Be Suitable For A Light HeartedAudience Reader.
Reduce Your Electrical Bill
Two things that usually end up a chuck full lot in your electrical bill are water heater and air conditioner's usage. Oh, by the way, Malaysian electrics rate will double start from next month. Be prepared..
You should not indulge yourself with entertainment too much (although "too much" is depending on your state of finances). As matter of fact, this should be the last thing in your budget. However, I am a normal person, and like any normal human being, entertainment plays a big part in our life.
Other example of you-can't-live-without-them-expenditures is vacation. You're stressed a year out and you really need this holiday to make you humane again.

Reduce Your Electrical Bill
Two things that usually end up a chuck full lot in your electrical bill are water heater and air conditioner's usage. Oh, by the way, Malaysian electrics rate will double start from next month. Be prepared..
- You should get use having your bath in the cold water especially for Asian people who don't experience 4 seasons through out the year. What is a better way to start your day with the coldness of the morning running water splashing your face that will literally shake you up and actually awake you?
- Open up your room windows and feel the breeze of fresh air so that you won't have to use air conditioner at all time (this step is not advisable for the city housing).
- Sleep naked when it's hot rather than switching on your air conditioner or fan. Make sure you lock your room door before trying.
- Try to switch off the unused plugs, including your water heater and air conditioner's plug - most people forget about it.
- Try to get your eyes use to see in the dark, switch off the unnecessary lamps. It's better than having a cheaper electrical bill than to be robbed at night.
You should not indulge yourself with entertainment too much (although "too much" is depending on your state of finances). As matter of fact, this should be the last thing in your budget. However, I am a normal person, and like any normal human being, entertainment plays a big part in our life.
- Cut your you-can-live-without-them-expenditures. For example, I will cut my Astro bill (a local satellite TV) by unsubscribed my Movie package. Of course this may be due to the fact that I rarely watch the movie channels (as I already saw most of the films there). My father wanted to unsubscribe it for a long time ago, this may a little push he needs.
- You-can-live-without-them-expenditures also may include the budget for clothing. Try to buy one expensive (and a good quality) cloth once in a year. You could always wear it for many years to come. Avoid buying something too trendy, as trendy is very seasonal. Classic is always a good (and save) choice.
- Try to reduce you-can't-live-without-them-expenditures. For me, it is the broadband internet (again, it depends on people). Try to choose the cheapest but reliable one. Although I am quite certain I can't do anything about mine.
- Try to reduce what I like to call, your "social visits" rather than "hanging out with friends" phrase (You would be less guilty, trust me). One of these social visits would easily make a hole in your pocket in no time. Less shopping, less hanging out at fancy cafés and restaurants, less clubbing, less cinema going and less everything you usually do on your social visits.
Other example of you-can't-live-without-them-expenditures is vacation. You're stressed a year out and you really need this holiday to make you humane again.
- If you want to go to oversea vacation, try to choose a country that its currency exchange rate is high. This is because you would not tend to spend a lot of money on shopping on top of other expenditures. London is one of the places that you shouldn't go although the currency rate is high because the price for things there are relatively cheaper (unless you have a very very high willing power to stop shopping).
- Whereas Europe countries are the best choice. It offers you many historical places to go without the urge to excessively shopping.
- Try to adjust yourself into having only one long vacation per year rather than an oversea trip every two months. Oh, and of course, try to explore interesting vacations in your own country.
- Opt to public transports whenever you're on holiday. You don't need to rush or anything right? Just enjoy the holiday. (This step may not apply to those who already use public transport every day to get to work).
- Plan your journey well and ensure you save some of your money for emergency situation when you're on holiday. Try not to be over budget.
- Reduce the usage of water. You don't need to wash your car or motorcycle every week. But you should take a bath at least thrice a day.
- Hoop in your colleague's car to work, use public transportation or simply walk.
- Teach your children the value of money. Reduce their monthly allowance if possible (this should be your last resort).
- Eat outside less. Try to cook at home. Which may or may not cause several food blogs and restaurants to close.
- Stop buying newspaper, there all bullshit anyway. Read them online instead.

Dear our beloved Malaysian Government,
We are faithful and law abide citizens have done what you have ordered. We have changed our lifestyle. And now what? No, telling people to stop eating rice when the rice price is high is not a solution. No, telling people to change their lifestyle could not solve all the problems. What about for those who struggle for the end meet, live just to survive another day and do not spend much or any on their "lifestyle"? No, not everyone send their children to study in U.K or Australia. No, not everyone has a chauffeur to drive you to work. You should try take one of our public transports, Minister. No, the rebates given will do little to cope with increasing prices and done nothing for those who don't own car or motorcycle. No, paying the same salary for government servants but in two installments is not the same as increase their salary. And no, we are not doing any street demonstration. What will be your action now?

Three simple steps that should be considered to cope with the price war:
- Increase the effectiveness of public transportation services. Increase the effectiveness of public transportation services. Increase the effectiveness of public transportation services. Read about Neomesuff and her vivid experience when she took the real public transport.
- Reduce tolls and car prices. Neighboring countries (except Brunei which news easily forget to compare with) may charged on higher petrol fuel, but their cars there are much cheaper than us.
- Tighten up the enforcements. Check that daily goods and services so that they do not increase their prices as wish.
