Waiting for Superman

Waiting for Superman poster

I was watching the Oprah Winfrey’s Show entitled Waiting for Superman episode, it really opened up my mind. Even though it mostly talked about the problem in the USA education system; bad teachers to be exact, I sincerely believe it applicable to all.

Waiting for Superman Summary
Waiting for Superman summary

The major problems with education system are:
1. Parents
2. Teachers
3. Students
4. Education System

Parents
Education starts at home. Children grow up looking upon their parents. Sometimes, the parents might not be there and the task is being trusted into the nursery homes and/or maids. A child nowadays can even feeling much closer to the one who is taking care of them, literally. Even my little brother is calling my baby sitter “mak” (meaning mother in Malay). You like it or you don’t at the end of the day, children will go back to their own house and back again in the responsibility of their parents. If the family is not stable, how that can ameliorate a child can to be successful in their education? Thus, to emulate the children well being in the school, parents should be a good example to their children.

Bad Teacher

Teachers
Bad teachers, or in the Waiting for Superman called it, “bad lemon” exist. No matter how bad there are, they are there to teach our children. They will teach our children, or the least, they will be spending time with our kids. A child deserved a better teacher; even the less fortunate one deserved it. Not everyone can afford spending thousands of dollar a year to get their children into the private schools and colleges.

I personally believe that an effective teacher can stimulate one’s growth of intellect. For example, I am focusing more on some particular subjects just because the teachers paid attention to me and encourage me to do the best for myself in the class. I salute these kinds of teacher everywhere I go.

Student life

Students
The first thing I will think about when I talk about study is laziness. Dear students, laziness are not a disease. Even if it is, it can be cured! The main reason of you become a lazy brat is because you tried all your best, but still can’t understand a certain thing or subject. There is no point of learning (or how they prefer to put it: “wasting my time”) something that is beyond your comprehensiveness right? WRONG. Click here to read about the tips to cure your laziness and study effectively.

Education system

Education System
Education system in Asia mostly focused on how many As you get in the school. The more As you got, the cleaver you are. The truth is, there are students who are not done well in the examination, but intelligent anyway. Examination should not be the sole benchmark of one’s intellectual.

It is time for us to change, no matter small it is. The children deserve a better future and we can do something about it; just become a better parents, better teacher, better student and contribute to a better education system.
The teacher who is indeed wise does not bid you to enter the house of his wisdom but rather leads you to the threshold of your mind. - Kahlil Gibran

Tips to Cure Laziness and Study Effectively

Tips to cure your laziness and study effectively:

Study and examination

1. Try new methods of learning. Some students can understand better in diagram, some in mind mapping procedures. Some even in writing everyone back what they have read. I have met one of my friends who love to draw everything in cartoon characters to grasp his understanding on certain subject better. You have to try different types of learning method before you can understand yourself well.

Mind Mapping
Mind mapping can be fun!

2. Try different environment. I prefer a quiet place while my friend prefers to study in a hectic environment (so that he will not fall asleep while studying). If you get bored stuck in one environment, try another to switch up a little bit. I have this habit of prowling into the dark along corridors when I get bored of studying. Some passerby shocked out of their life, but that is the fun right?

3. Group study. Although I am not a big fan of this method of studying, in my university’s years, I have to adapt to it. Sometimes, there is a time when you cannot cover all of your subjects. Just ask one or two of your friends to study with you. They can present or explain to you in a short summary so you can understand better. Group study can provides you so much fun! Too much fun actually. Haish.

4. Always plan what you want to study. Laziness happens when you think you’re way too behind of your schedule or you’re too ahead of your study schedule. Just to be safe, write down what you are planning to learn on that particular day. Make sure you follow your schedule. Please note, just a simple schedule plan is sufficient.
Timetable for Idiot
Simple study plan!

5. Be flexible. I hate personal study timetable; yes the one that all your old teachers asked you to write it down and paste it on your study desk. The truth is, from my personal experience, I will never follow the timetable. The first reason is that there are certain subjects you want to learn it depending on your mood. For example, after finish watching CSI, I usually can focus more on my biology subjects. On the other hand, just to wake up your sleepy head, you might want to refresh it by doing some calculation. As a result, I planned my study as general as possible and that can suit mine better.

Note: This list is based on my personal experience. If you failed after following me tips, don't give up, that just means that you are not me!

The examination week is here! Good luck to everybody! I missed my college life so much! Have fun guys! Good luck!

Universiti Sains Malaysia Graduation Day Hiatus

USM Upacara Konvokesyen Keempat Puluh Dua
Universiti Sains Malaysia Upacara Konvokesyen Keempat Puluh Dua (42th)

Last Friday I am officially a Chemical Engineering graduate from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). I took a couple of days off from working and excitedly when back to Penang where I had spent my last four years there. The excitements were merely for seeing my course mates and other friends I met in USM. Engineering students’ convocation session was the sixth session, 6th of August 2010 at 3.30PM.

On the graduation day itself, everything went on smoothly. I went to the newly renovated Dewan Tunku Syed Putra (DSTP), registered my name at Dewan Kuliah L (Lecture Theater L) and wore my beautiful purple color robes correctly. The USM official personnel there were very helpful and skillful while handling with the agitated graduates. After few minutes of frantic chit chat with my friends, we proceed to DSTP. Chemical engineering graduates were seated at the centre front of the hall.

After a couple of hours of squeezing on the chair with extremely limited spaces to move around; even the slight movement of your legs can disturb the adjacent seats, my name was called. By using electronic name tag, we were scanned twice and your name will appear on the screen. I received my fake scroll (inside the purple file contained only the list of instruction which you have to follow in order to retrieve your real scroll) and after a very long doa recital, the ceremony ended and the unofficial photo sessions started.

Chemical Engineering Graduate
Me with my controversial sun glasses (some people requested for my "natural look" picture, which I did not take any.

The weather was super hot – a typical weather in Penang, and wearing two pieces of suits and a heavy robe were not helping either. After few hours of endless smiles, hugs and small chit chat, I called it a day. I was drenching with my own sweat and at times, I noticed that my stomach was initiating an orchestra of hunger – I only ate breakfast before going there. Straight from USM, my parents and I went to Queensbay Mall for our dinner and a short shopping spree. We went back to the hotel around 10PM.

On Saturday, after taking my breakfast and went to a cybercafé along the Penang road to print out a survey slip which I forgot to bring (which charged me RM5 for printing one page of paper and the minimum 30 minutes of computer usage? Awesome!), we went back to USM to return back the robe and taking my official scroll. That when everything went wrong!

Firstly, I was not familiar with the main campus layout since the engineering campus located separately in the mainland of Penang and not in the island like the main campus. Unfortunately, USM seems to assume that people know exactly where to go around that HUGE campus. Signboards are rare and even though there were guards situated at major junctions, they were not familiarized with the area themselves. Perhaps they were assigned from outside to help with the event. One of them even said, “Just follow the crowd” – which was totally irrelevant since the crowd was attending another session of graduation on that day and not to collect their official scrolls like me. Whereas quite a few times the guards just gave the wrong direction and we ended up circling the area more than once.

After much effort; including by resorting to the GPS guidance, we finally found the Dewan Utama (Main Hall) to collect my scroll and pictures. The services there were bad! The officials during registration were rude – which is fine to me since I am still young, but not every graduate is around mid 20s, some of them are around mid 30s and 40s. Most of the graduates in the hall were still not sure on the procedures that need to be followed in order to obtain the scroll.

It turned out to be like this: register at the counter by giving out the receipt which stated you already returned the robe, followed by checking your financial status (make sure no fees are not yet paid) and moved to the survey counter where you must submitted two of the surveys given earlier. Next, you must go to the library counter to ensure you have returned all the books. Then only can you go to the scroll counter to get your scroll, before heading to another hall to buy your graduation pictures.

Regrettably, no visible notices were posted to spell out this instruction and we basically need to ask those who have collected their scrolls to help us. The instruction if stated properly can make the transition between counters and halls smoothly, but sorry to say, it was not there.

Ways for improvement:

  • Provide a map of the main campus layout to the visitors in the booklet given
  • OR put temporary signage of important places along the road that will be visited by visitors (DSTP, Hamzah Sendut Library and Dewan Utama)
  • AND ensure the guards there are familiar with the campus
  • Not unnecessary blocking the road and further complicated the navigation to one place to another
  • Personnel involved must have a common courtesy towards others
  • Make sure the instruction was properly placed at the designated areas

Graduation
Graduates celebrating their convocation!

This is not me lambasted my own university; it is because of love I highlighted these blunders to others. When lots of posters were set up to proudly announce USM’s APEX status (Accelerated Programme for Excellence), the quality of services provided by the university need to be upheld high as par as its noble vision and mission; which is, Transforming Higher Education for a Sustainable Tomorrow.

Kindly noted, that this post was written from author’s own personal point of view and experiences on those two days of hiatus and madness. Others may have a better experience than this. More PICTURES of my graduation day will be posted later. Thank you.

First Ever USM Blogger Gathering

USM Blogger
Hello again my fellow readers. As you might have noticed, I haven’t been around the blogsphere last week. I have been busy busting my ass in and out library during office hour, while having dinner and enjoy some quality times with my friends when the night came. I am sorry if you have to endure the constant and continuous (some even deemed it as annoying) updates through my twitter account about where and what am I doing at that period of time; thanks to my current new “game”, “foursquare”. It basically will pin point your current location to your friends.

I rarely talk about what is going on with my daily life, but in this post, I will talk about what had been happening to me these last few days. If any of you who are not comfortable reading this kind of entry, please just skip this post. This week, I have been spending lots of my night life went out with my blogger friends from my university which is Universiti Sains Malaysia (University Science Malaysia, USM). I have known some of these amazing people from my daily encounter around the campus and some of them solely through blogsphere. Thus, one of my friends, YAN^S had made an initiative to organize a blogger event for us.

First Night:
Attendance: The organizer, YAN^S, his partner friends, Nikillas, their friend, Dalila and bluecrystaldude and Lilyto.
Location: McD Juru
Purpose: Just getting to know each other better. YAN^S was my roommate last couple of years.

We also met DeeDee with his friends there

There are lots of other USM bloggers that were not attending this event. I am sure if we had a chance, we could organize another one in the future. However, my life as a chemical engineering student in the campus almost comes to the end. My last paper will be next week, Monday (26th April 2010) and I will be back to my hometown in Johore on the next weekend. I really cherished the time I had spent here in USM and really thankful for everything that I had learned, stumbled upon, meeting new friends and the unforgettable experiences here. Hopefully, the future in my life will be even better. Enjoy your weekend!

P/S: I am looking forward to meet other bloggers too!

P/S: I will link all these fellow bloggers later. I have to get ready to go out to TGI's Friday with my Final Year Project's supervisor and one of my colleagues! Oh darn, I am getting fatter every night!

The Road Not Taken

Taking Risk
Image from Bluecrystaldude's Tumblr

In life, you will always come across with making decisions. And in every decisions that you made, there always a glimpse of risk that come with it. Whether you’re trying to decide to go for lunch at Restaurant A and then saw that the restaurant is closed, or you’re going to have to choose between your loved one and your friends to spend the time together, or you’re at the intersection of making the biggest career decision in your life. In the end, it always comes to yourself whether you want to take a chance by doing one thing instead of the other.

In time of making one of those decisions, I always remember the poem written by Robert Frost, The Road Not Taken. You never know whether you had made the right decision or not. No matter how it will turn to be, eventually, you will have to face the responsibilities of your decision. Hurm. But it never stops me from wondering what the other road had to offer.

Make a Decision
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth.

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same.

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Question for The Day
What is the biggest decision that you had made and how do you decide that is the right one?

My answer would be in the beginning of my degree study. I had the opportunity to choose on what degree should I take and in the end, I chose to do degree in chemical engineering. Whether I had made the right decision? No one will ever know.

Amazing 2009

2009

2009 definitely has brought lots of good things for me. These were the few worth mentioning things that had happen. I hope it’s not too late to wish you guys a Happy 2010! Yippee! Good things that happen to me in chronological order:

1. SECAV
Jurong Shipyard
I had participated in Engineering Exchange Initiative, Singapore Education and Career Visit (SECAV) in January. We went to Jurong Shipyard, Nanyang Technology University and National University of Singapore.

2. Industrial Training
During in between 3 months of semester break, I had the opportunity to do my industrial training at Sime Darby Technology Centre, Petaling Jaya. That was and thank God, only lasted there for a week. I moved to my brother’s house for the rest of my weeks there.

3. NACES
This time my friends and I went to University Malaysia Sabah to participate in National Chemical Engineering Symposium 2009 and you guys already knew, our team won the first place in the presentation competition. This year, the theme was Global Water Crisis: What can We Do? The exposure with others future chemical engineers from all over Malaysia was such an eye opening experience.

4. Bro’s wedding
My big brother was married at the age of 26 years old! Congratulation!

5. Sime Darby Engineering Sdn. Bhd.
I was lucky enough to be short listed for an interview with Sime Darby Engineering Sdn. Bhd. which located in Pasir Gudang, Johore. This company is the biggest company under Sime Darby Energy & Utilities and they are designing, producing and commissioning oil rig platform for oil and gas companies. There were only 6 of Sime Darby scholars were called with 3 of us are still studying, 2 already got other jobs and 1 just graduated. The interview session was, how I should put this, was super INTENSE. Try imagining you’re surrounded by 28 assessors from Sime Darby Engineering and another 2 from Sime Darby Head Quarters, Human Resource department. OUCH! The good great news is I got the job! But the not so good news is I am not sure I am mentally and physically prepared enough to work there. Oh and I am afraid of height. Hehe.

6. Finished design part 1
Even though I only scoring average grade for this subject, the experience of building a chemical plant from a grass root basis (from scratch) was priceless. All those sleepless nights and heated arguments are stressful but worthy.

7. On the way of completing FYP
Not only the project is almost complete, a master student and I (we did the same topic) are were forced by our kind supervisor planning to submit a collaborative paper on our research project to the International Conference on Process Engineering and Advanced Materials 2010 that will be held on June in Kuala Lumpur. If everything went well, the paper will be submitted at the end of this month.

8. Read more books than ever
While doing my final year project, I had the ample time on my hand in between waiting to collect samples. I read more than 10 books this year. An amazing number for the average 2 or 3 books per year :) My current favorite books are by James Patterson, Mitch Albom and David Sedaris. AMAZING!

9. Reached 22 years old
What is the great thing of being older? I just wish I am a little bit wiser this year.

10. The best New Year celebration ever!
Bukit Merah Laketown Resort
This year around, I celebrated New Year with my friends and one of my very much sportive lecturers at Bukit Merah Laketown Resort. It’s a waterpark resort in Taiping Malaysia. Thank you Dr. Hekarl Uzir!

What Have I Done for These Past Few Weeks?

*UPDATED on 5th September 2009*

Winner of Technical Presentation NACES 2009
Hi guys! I am back again. Haha. Sorry for missing out lately. I involved in so many activities until I lost track of time. And suddenly, it’s almost the end of 2009. Gosh. Where does the time fly?

First of all, I have been juggling the time between my design project and my final year project. My team and I had to design a chemical plant for the production of nitric acid. We proposed the plant to be built in Bintulu Sarawak due to the availability of our raw material; ammonia. We had to plant everything from the scratch; do the market analysis, cost estimation, production capacity and so on.

On the other hand, I just started my final year project. The title of my final year project is “Taming the Wild Type of xxx (the name of enzyme) on the Bioreduction of 1, 4-bromophenyl-ethanone into (R)-1,4-bromorphenyl ethanol in the Production of Angiotensin Receptor Blocker (ARB) Chiral Drug Precursor”. Don’t worry if you couldn’t understand what the heck I just said. I couldn’t understand it either when I first heard it. But in the layman words, I am trying to produce a drug to dilate blood vessel that hopefully will reduce the possibility of heart failure, treating high blood pressure and preventing kidney failure.

As Nobel as the project may sound, I cannot expose the name of enzyme that I use and the detailed procedures of the research done. If this project successfully conducted, there is a possibility of selling the product. I am not so good hearted after all.

Next, I also participated in National Chemical Engineering Symposium (NACES) 2009, held in Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) last weekend. Yes, this is the same competition where I won the second runner up in Technical Writing competition last year. But this time around, I am in the Technical Presentation team. And guess what? We won the first place! Yeah! Congrats to all the presenters. Even though my university only sent six participants (one of the fewest among other universities) – four Indians, one Chinese girl and one Malay, we actually won something there. Of course, when all the chemical engineering students’ representatives of universities in Malaysia gathered around, the environment is very formal yet educative.

We won!
USM The Presentation Team

Young students with their bubbling and innovative ideas are more than keen to share their opinion on this year theme; “Water Crisis: What Can We Do?”. I was impressed with some of the ideas and at the end of the three days event, I somehow feel a little bit smarter than before. Well, at least I have the opportunity to have an in depth knowledge on that particular topic. By the way, rest assured, I am sure if Malaysia is having water crisis in the near future, we, as the budding chemical engineers will come out with the best solution for the country. *crossing fingers*

On Monday night, we flew back to the college and then I have to attend Annual General Meeting of Chemical Engineering Student Society on Wednesday. After the meeting, I went straight back to Kuala Lumpur and will be back in Johor tomorrow (on Friday) to celebrate the first day of fasting in my hometown. I can’t wait to rejuvenate (and washing my clothes) as soon as I arrive home. It has been hectic few weeks for me and not having enough sleep is very tiring. Have a great weekend everyone! And for Muslim, Happy Fasting!

By the way, since I upgraded my firefox browser, I cannot find my Entrecard toolbar. They said that it’s not compatible with this current version of firefox. Am I the only one who noticed this?

I am Living in a Mad World

There were lots of messes going on in the blogsphere and I was somehow entangled in it. No, I wasn't talking about the Entrecard and its paying ads. Even that I can handle. It's totally different kind of problem. Some of you already know about the problem, but most are not. Even though blogsphere seems like a large place, the truth is it smaller than you expected; especially when you are sharing lots of common readers and commenters with each other. Therefore, I rather not elaborate further on this matter as it may divide this already small community.

That being said, I would like to express my regrets and my sincere apology to Gagay for I might just contribute to her disqualification from one particular contest that she joined. I am truly sorry Gagay.

I will start my final examination tomorrow (13th April 2009) and with all these messes, I am mentally and emotionally exhausted. I haven't been sleeping properly and even when I did, I dreamt about commit suicide or killing someone else. Gosh. Can someone build a time traveling machine for me so that I could just fast forward my life and see what the next two weeks will hold?

Kindly noted: There will be no linky love in this post. I even suspended my first commenter contest for this post. I just don't feel like it. The contest will be back in the next post. Thank you.

P/S: I was slightly disappointed to see that my REAL NAME was revealed to all more than once in the comment section of the host’s contest post. I thought that kind of thing is confidential? Whatever. Sigh.

Prime Minister, Entrecard and Hell Mouth - It Never Gets Easier

Putrajaya, Malaysia
Malaysia’s Newest Prime Minister - After whom? I can’t seem to remember our last Prime Minister name. Hurm..

Najib Abdul Razak will be elected as the new Prime Minister of Malaysia today. The sixth Prime Minister will be handed over the topmost job from the former Prime Minister, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. The aftermath of March general election in a way has forced Badawi to step down from the post. The country hopes for a strong leader that will guide its citizens in embracing the economic difficulties ahead.

In case you are wondering why am I writing this way, at this very moment (10 am) I still have a hangover from months of doing technical writings. My hands are burned due to the heat from the keyboard. No, seriously. Anyway, back to the topic, I hope this time around, Najib would show some changes that he has been promised before. No corruption, no personal favor and more actions.

Oh, and Badawi has been giving a Tun title from the King. How considered of him but damn Malaysia and its lengthy titles.

(Entrecard Top Dropper list and Hell Mouth after the jump)

Thank you for My Top Entrecard Droppers

I had been religiously doing my dropping and I was able to complete 30 days of doing the same 300 drops without a missed. Well, there was one day I only managed to drop 167 drops. But I blamed it on my internet connection. Driven by my undying curiosity (and my passion for maths), I have done some calculation on the hours I spent on dropping. I relatively need 3 hours maximum to finish my 300 drops, and times that with 30 days, I managed to spend about 90 hours of otherwise my quality times for myself on Entrecard. Whether I am going to do the same thing this month? Of course I will. Well, at least I will try my best.

No, I am not addicted. I knew I had a problem, I just too damn lazy to care.

These are Hot Shit Form Here’s March Top Droppers:

Congratulation to I Learn Online Marketing for winning 1000 EC and the space ads just below my Entrecard inbox. For your information, I took this data from my statistic page on the 1st April at 2 am in the morning. The result may have changed from that moment on.

Out from the Hell Mouth into the Hell Stomach - well, at least it’s warmer there

I have finished my tiring months of study. I had done about 9 tests, 3 heart wrenching (literally) VIVA presentations (I bad with abbreviations don’t ask me what VIVA stands for) and finally I have officially entered my study week today. This means I will no longer spent 9 hours attending lectures every day. This also means that I will be having my final examination in the following week. Yey to that. I can’t wait for this semester to over.

I usually will spend my study weeks undergoing the same routine over and over again. I will be spending about 8 hours in the library (at least an hour less then before) and enjoying myself during the night. So, don’t worry, I will definitely spend my times attending your sites and replying comments on my blog. :)

Oh and I am glad most of you like my previous post, The World is Getting Weirder. It’s a simple post about some weird news. I wish this week will bore the same weirdness for me to share. And if this thing takes off well, I might change my site tagline. It would be: Hot Shit Form Here, I am Just Weird.

Hermen Duen - My Home is Nowhere Without You

Hermen Dune - My Home is Nowhere Without You My Home is Nowhere Without You
I decided to join Music Monday this week. Sorry for my absence. I am fully occupied with my study again this week. I have another three tests coming up this week; Renewable and Alternative Energy on Monday, Chemical Engineering Lab II on Thursday and Mathematical Methods for Chemical Engineering on Friday. Gosh, and this isn’t my final exam for this semester yet. *Sigh*

Anyway, I would like to introduce you to one of my favorite duo which is Hermen Duen. This is a French duo that will tickle your heart from inside. A great choice when you’re down or when your head is tangled up like mine. “My Home is nowhere without you” is such a beautifully written love song, I feel obligated to share it with you guys. Check also their interesting video too!

By the way, anyone of you knows Ron Russell? I really like his comments and would love to visit his site, but unfortunately he usually doesn’t leave his link behind. Sir, if you’re reading this message, kindly enough to drop me your link. Your comments are too good to be ignored. Thank you. And since we are on the same subject, I would like to remind my commenters once again that please let this page fully load first. I am using CommentLuv and would be honored to share your linky love here. Oh, and don’t forget to leave out your Name too ;)

Hermen Dune

People put pictures of places in frames
I remember someone's face but then I forget their names
I have a book for writing down who I meet and where I'm going to
But my home is nowhere without you

There is nowhere like the ocean to breathe
And the world is wonderful as it is
Now I might try to settle down on some beach in Malibu
But my home is nowhere without you

My home is nowhere without you
My home is nowhere without you
My home is nowhere without you
My home is nowhere without you

I met the natives and they shook my hand
In a warehouse in Providence, Rhode Island
They said they had a room for me there with an incredible view
But my home is nowhere without you

There are houses full of dogs and full of bugs
In a city full of gods and full of thugs
I wandered there down the streets and up on first avenue
But my home is nowhere without you

My home is nowhere without you
My home is nowhere without you
My home is nowhere without you
My home is nowhere without you

My home is nowhere without you
My home is nowhere without you
My home is nowhere without you
My home is nowhere without you
