The Kidcrash - Discography (2004-2008)

LPs

Jokes (2007)

I don’t really know how to start writing about The Kidcrash’s 2007 release Jokes. I could write an intro about the bands history (stale), some preluding words about the incurrence of the record and some statements of the band (maybe interesting, but too lavishly) or I could start off with a little genre definition and sweeping swipes at the MTV-emo generation who obviously knows a sh** about music (seriously, how pretentious would that be?). After all I decided to go without an introducing paragraph (besides the already existing one of course), only concentrating on the main thing this all will be about; the fabulous music you’ll find on this record. Be prepared.

It opens up with some of the most beautiful interacting guitars I’ve ever heard, the intro to “Turtlelephant”. From that point on you’ll experience the maybe best blend of mellow mid-west emo, rough but melodic skramz ala Daitro and more blustering contemporaries like Off Minor, whose eruptive character and everchanging quiet/loud sections present a formular that The Kidcrash will push to its limits during the 41 minutes of playing time. While the majority of the heavy sections are somewhat well-known but effective, with passioned screaming over dissonant chords tightened by poignant leads and sick drumming, the calmer parts and their resolution in eruptive bursts of crashing distortion are the highlight of the record and will hit you at least 3 times per song. No track relies on one hitting crescendo, on one climax that’s supposed to blow the listener out of the water. Instead they use the quiet/loud approach for a multifaceted rhythmic pathway that evolves the songs through beautiful melodic motifs as well as textured and harmonized modulations among the single instruments. Especially their apprehension of an inventive and sensible use of altered time signatures, that conclude the particular musically themes without ceasing the proceeding flow with start-stop breaks or weird transitions is sweeping, done in best math rock manner. Most prominent on closer listenings, the driving force behind this mathy character of The Kidcrash’s music is the colorful drumming, sounding uncommonly off-kilter while outlining likewise the rhythmical backbone and putting emphasis on unaccented notes to provide the songs with new dynamical spins. You'd almost think that the tripping drumming is merely juxtaposed to the perfectly intertwining guitars, rarely profound meshing but jointly rushing forward when the song picks up speed and intensity after trundling, guitar driven interludes.

While they manage it to range every instrument on the same level, The Kidcrash compounded in the vocals section; and really for the better. Keeping the screaming level relatively low in the mix, they only add it to intensify the impact of the heavy segments and exclude it from the softer arrangements, letting the beautiful compositions shine in their instrumental beauty. Due to the occurrence of many of such louder momentums, the scrubbing screams toe the line flawlessly into the complete works, not remaining as an extraordinary appearance that takes the spot as the songs peak by accident.

Lets conclude: Breathtaking, homogenous, coordinated, free-flowing, beautiful, exciting, appealing, balanced (I could go on for quite some time) emo that ditches in post-hardcore, math rock and screamo terrain at pleasure to provide itself with the momentary needed changes in sound. All its influences make Jokes a non-dreary and challenging-but-catchy collection of nine songs, whose richness of detail and countless subtle nuances give the record an impressive replay value. With some of the best-matched guitarists (check out the in reverb drenched guitar wankery in the one and a half minute instrumental “Kissed From a Roach On The Grave”), whose individual skill filter through on every occasion (the two-handed tapping parts in “Hypothetical Basking Shark” for instance), a killing drummer (he really is) and especially the ability to combine everything into a tight package, The Kidcrash set a landmark of an album that everybody into good music should check out. And for all those people justifiably claiming Gospel’s The Moon Is A Dead World as the best thing the emo genre has to offer: Be prepared for a change. Be prepared.

New Ruins (2004)

New Ruins is some kind of a double-edged sword. Clearly showing off the talent and ability stored in The Kidcrash, it seems that they utilized it in a too forced and reckless approach. They merge skilled dual-guitar work and sophisticated drum patterns with obvious pop punk sensibilities, namely hook-driven song structures and corded up songwriting. While admittedly the technical aspects can’t prevent the songs from being typical pop punk affairs, The Kidcrash used them to jazz up the tracks with mathy riffing, tight drum fills and more compact vocalism/lyricism.

Containing melodic progressions that are catchy and easily accessible, appropriate varying rhythm figures and the driving force of the speeding guitars, New Ruins offers nine well-written songs that are entertaining and rocking from start to finish. Sure it can’t compare itself with the masterpiece that is Jokes, but it’s a great beginner record for people wanting to give the whole math rock thingy a first look, and a welcome change in the more and more stagnating genre that pop punk is today.

Some songs to check out: “Your Valley Is Our Volcano (Preview)”, “Scalpel Cuts Concrete” and "Drowning Swan’s Song”.

Tracklist:
01 - Your Valley Is Our Volcano
02 - Until the Light Kills the Film

  • Split 10" w/ Coffin Dancer (2007)
  • Heavy Nugs And Heady Chugs' Split 7" w/ L'Antietam (2008)
The Kidcrash's songs on the splits range from short screamo attacks ("Pig Hands") to lenghty epics ("Water Weed"), picking up the sound the band left off with the glorious album Jokes.

EPs & Demos

  • Demo CDR (2006)
  • I Haven't Had A Date In 4 Years Goldie Hawn Goldie Hawn Goldie Hawn EP (2005)
While the demo only consists of five early versions from upcoming Jokes songs (awesome of course but get Jokes right away), the EP offers three untitled songs that are much more hardcore inspired than anything The Kidcrash has done before and afterwards. Not as intriguing as their later works, the tracks are catchy and tightly written as well, worth to check out.

Sphericube - Jugda (2008) & Demo (2003)

"Post-rock, once a term brought to life to label bands who where re-inventing the rock scene in a strange age - one dominated by Generation X, the nineties. A first generation of post-rock bands took rock to an almost lost form of crafting music, free of sales figures, boardroom-imposed attitudes, and hipness. They inspired a whole new generation that was in need of guidance... a second generation of bands charted the genre and spread the word, and soon this train is unstoppable! As time passed, the second generation drew out the details of this new uncharted continent and provided a sturdy home base for new explorers to follow in their predecessors footsteps. Nowadays, a third generation of post-rock explorers is surfacing and aim to amaze us with their crucible of influences that are no longer subjected to genres as we knew them. Sphericube is one of those third generation bands, and their self-released debut Jugda is the map of their Slovenian settlement.

Most of the times when I listened to Jugda a slight cold shiver ran over my spine before the first minute was over. Plucked violin strings and delightfully reverbed guitars paving the way for a few raising hairs, hooks that sound more like faint bends made some intriguing, yet minimal, shifts that promised me that I was in for some skilled compositions. The drum suggested that I should tighten my laces, I would be in for a serious round of foot tapping. Then the minute was over... the singer wailed himself into Emergency Lane like a siren that rubbed more Thom Yorke in my face than Radiohead is capable of. Now, for the record, Thom Yorke has some brilliant vocal chords, Radiohead has some beautiful tracks, but I've had it with their knock-off sound ever since OK Computer. This is the main issue I have with Jugda, every once in a while the shiver down my spine was provoked by my loathing of repetition. Despite my issues, I noticed my foot found his groove back and I decided to indulge myself in the extraordinary blend of wailing vocals and, what sounds like, a borrowed drum computer of Björk's on a canvas of post-rocking melancholy with strokes of jazz.

Sphericube has a profound web of influences and techniques which they tap into, staccato practice of the guitars and drums make up for an energising combination even when there's not much energy at the surface. Damping techniques with origins in reggae and brit-pop are put into well considered use just as most of the sampling. Kudos for the work at the mixing desk when it comes to the placement of samples along side of the 'classical' instrumentation, not an easy task but well mastered in a manner that allows you to enjoy every soundwave at hand. Perfectly timed crunch on the drums, just the right tone settings for the deeper, hypnotic riffs make each track an exhilarating listen. But this being their debut, an error was almost inevitable.

As if Sphericube was too excited to think about it, they forgot one important thing when it comes to making an album, cohesion. At best, a collection of tracks by one band resembles a retirement 'best of...' album, the lack of a decent transition in between tracks is disturbing. If they had made the effort to make this 45 minute compilation into an exploration of an hour, this could've been closer to an 8/10. Taking the time for an intro and/or outro would give the listener the time to acclimatize from the previous track in stead of been thrown into the next one like a child thrown into the deep end of a pool for the first time. If they manage to keep their compositions of the same quality and take this advice in consideration for their follow up, I'm sure it'll be a stunning release. For the time being, Jugda will stay an appetizer of Sphericube's fully deployed glory."

Lieberhonig - Discography (2006 - 2008)

Spanien.

Men As Trees - Discography (2005 - 2008)

Surrent - Discography (2007 - 2008)

Der 29 - jährige Jake Hildreth aus Bowling Green, Ohio hat insgesamt 4 Projekte am Start. "North Hero", "Surrent", "Luma and Chroma" und "Two Party System". Was der Name wohl bedeuten mag?

Change Of Plans - Discography (2004 - 2008)

"What Is Change Of Plans? Change of Plans is against having to take afternoon nap by force in kindergarden, likes languages, likes to sleep. Change of Plans sometimes feels lonely, likes cold beer and chicken wings, says “nothing like a cosy home studio”. Change of Plans loves to travel, likes the female, doesn’t like breast implants, hates all umbrellas and does get psychologically challenged by the traffic. Change of Plans is anti-discipline, needs to sort out logistics and must be an introvert. Change of Plans is suitable for the whole family, likes Michael Jackson and despises child abuse. Change of Plans is recyclable, if you push it Change of Plans may fall. Change of Plans is confused about time allocation. Change of Plans is a friendly bunch with a clear lack of ambition. Change of Plans is a collection of short stories. Change of Plans is nothing different than you." - http://changeofplansist.blogspot.com/

Sommer 2004 in Istanbul!

Natlyea & Natalie Mardi- Discography (2006 - 2008)

Also, laden und genießen. Am besten bei einer guten Bong!

"Subfrequent bass waves and endless drones, ambient soundscapes about chanting spheres of solitude, the vast void of silence, deeply embraced in meditation, slowly creeping slug of doom and death, decay and delay. Here is the latest project by rypher, actively doing music since 2001. It all began with a few noise tracks, and with current main project "natlyea", it has culminated into a mesmerizing, subsonic experiment. The first natlyea EP, titled "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" came out just beginning of this year, and since then the project has evolved from atmospheric space rock intentions into an even more atmospheric adventure of soundscapes, very dark and full of drones, and according to black syrup zine, "a haunting ambience"." - Jamendo.com Info (2006)

Northvia - Discography (2003 - 2008)

Northvia, an instrumental post rock band, formed in the fall of 2002 when Thomas Lloyd (Guitar) and Rob Colclasure (Drums) met in Tallahassee, Fl. Soon after Rick Arnow (Bass) and John Garner (Guitar) joined the group when they first performed in February of 2003. After recording two EP's in Hattiesburg, MS (S/T, Your Detached and Self Obsessed) in 2003 and 2004, Rick Arnow left the band and was replaced by Rob's brother William Colclasure (Bass). Citing influences ranging from Radiohead to Samuel Barber, Northvia has developed their own niche in the post-rock genre. In 2005 they recorded their first full length album Sleeping in Ariports which was released online through the London Based Lost Children Net Label. After a brief hiatus, the band reformed in 2007 in Orlando, Fl adding guitarist David Tinsley from the Grand Canyons. Northvia is currently preparing to release their 4th album 'Pure Magic' during the summer of 2008.
