Time Has Come - Neurodiversity (2010)

Death-, Grind-, Math-, Hardcore band from Germany. Similar to "War From A Harlots Mouth" . This release is mixed with Ambient interludes.

Our Subatomic Earth - Underscore (2010)

Release text: "The Earth is on fire. I cry out to you from my state of weakness, where the slate crumbles beneath the flesh, leaving a void, hollowed shell like that of a distant crustacean. I cry out to you, wherever your bunker lies beneath this unyielding earth, safe from the distorted, abstract woes of supreme mortal justice. Whether you are heavenly man, heavenly woman, or of absolute sin as I am in essence, I cry out to you. The Earth is on fire.

The Earth is on fire, but nothing is smoking. The incessant immolation sears not at the hearts, but the souls of the grieving, whose pleads fall upon a deaf congregation. Though they have ears, they are not listeners; rather, they do when told like negligent drones. Whether they own computers, televisions, or even car stereos, they are not listeners, and nothing is smoking.

What is smoke, but a visible consequence, merely appearing after the damage is done? What then is fire, but a chemical process, smoldering bodies to carbonaceous debris? The Earth is on fire, and nothing is smoking yet.

In every dispute, they followed God's intent. When you were an infant, they gave the world weapons; when you were eleven, they went to the desert; when you could gamble, they went back again; and today your country, sweet land of misery, looked to the serpentines and left you to drown.

Fire Walk With Me! - Jenova EP (2009)

"Hast du die Band gestern gesehen? Ich hab mich anfangs so gefragt: 'Fangen die auch noch an? Gehts jetzt mal richtig los?' Aber dann, so nach ein paar Minuten, war ich wahnsinnig fasziniert von diesen stetig wiederholten Melodien... hat mich ein bisschen an den Psychedelic Rock der 70er erinnert..."

So kommentierte ein Kumpel von mir den Auftritt von Fire Walk With Me! vor dem besetzten Hörsaal H2 der Regensburger Universität. Da er in der Welt des Post Rock/Post Hardcore nicht allzu sehr bewandert ist, sind ihm keine anderen Assoziationen eingefallen... und doch kann ich dem Mann nur zustimmen, wäre aber selbst wahrscheinlich kaum auf die Idee gekommen, rifflastigen Post Hardcore-Epen mit Psychedelic Rock zu vergleichen.

Die vorliegende EP der vier Regensburger enthält zwar nur 3 Tracks (2 Stücke), bringt es trotzdem auf die stolze Laufzeit von 34 Minuten. Kernstück dieser EP ist das 22 minütige Jenova (Jenova: Origin, Jenova: Destination), das ein paar von euch eventuell schon Live um die Ohren geschleudert bekommen haben... auf den lokalen Konzerten, die ich besucht habe, gehörte es definitiv immer zur Setlist.

Und nun liegt dieses Monster endlich auch digital und sogar als physische Kopie vor... leider habe ich bis jetzt noch keine EP bekommen, aber vielleicht ändert sich das ja noch (ist ja bald Weihnachten). Sowohl vom Sound als auch vom Inhalt ist diese EP über alle Zweifel erhaben und als Bonus gibts noch eine Extended Acoustic Version von Regina Maris, die sich zu einem meiner Lieblingstracks aus dem Jahre 2009 entwickelt hat.

Also, das ist es, mein persönliches Weihnachtsgeschenk für unsere hochgeachteten Blog-Leser und für alle, die es noch werden wollen. Frohe Weihnachten an euch und auch an das ganze Silence is also a Sound-Team!

"Did you see that band the other day? At first, I was wondering whether they ever got started, but then, after about five minutes, I was completely enchanted by those steadily repeating melodies... it reminded me a lot of those psychedelic rock bands from the seventies..."

... said a friend of mine after a Fire Walk With Me! concert at the University of Regensburg, playing for all of those who were on strike (and still are). Not knowing anything about post hardcore or post rock, that was the only kind of music he could connect those songs to. Speaking for myself, I would never have come to comparing FWWM! to psychedelic rock bands from the seventies... and yet, man's got a point!

This EP I am listening to at this very moment contains only three tracks, but with a running time of 34 minutes. And at the core of this EP lies the epic Jenova (Jenova: Origin, Jenova: Destination) which some of you might already have heard live since it usually is on every setlist.

And finally, this monster has landed, both as a digital release as well as a physical copy... unfortunately, I haven't got my hands on a physical copy yet... but hopefully, this will change soon (Xmas is only a few days away). This EP is fantastic, both sound and content are perfect, and as an additional treat, they have put an extended accoustic version of one of their early songs, Regina Maris, on this EP. That track has grown very dear to me and is definitely on my Top Tracks of 2009 list.

So, this is it, my personal Xmas gift to all of our present and future readers. Merry Xmas to you and the whole Silence is also a Sound team!

Kiruna - Social Haven Of Cultural Decline (EP) (2006)

Social Haven of Cultural Decline ist die sogenannte DIY Demo von Kiruna aus Lyon. Auf den 4 Tracks ihrer ersten Veröffentlichung paart sich energischer Post-Hardcore mit vertracktem Noise-Rock. Klangteppiche aus dissonanten Gitarrenmelodien mischen sich mit harten Riffs, denen vom wuchtigen Bass und Schlagzeug gehörig Nachdruck verliehen wird. Hinzu kommen wütende Lyrics, die sich gesungen und geschrien in die Songs einfügen.

Kiruna treffen mit ihrem dreckigen teils druckvollen teils atmosphärischen Sound genau meinen Geschmack. Die 4 Songs machen Lust auf mehr und sind für Freunde von Bands wie Shellac oder Young Widows auf jeden Fall empfehlenswert.

Social Haven of Cultural Decline is the so-called DIY demo by Kiruna from Lyon. On the 4 tracks of their first release, energetic Post-Hardcore mates with complex Noiserock. Dissonant guitarmelodies mix with abrasive Riffs which are being enforced by the massive bass and drums.
The angry vocals, sung and screamed, blend right into the songs.

Kirunas dirty atmospheric and powerful Sound is definitely to my taste. The 4 Songs awaken a desire for more, and are a recommendation for friends of Bands such as Shellac or Young Widows.

Learn To Swim-Event-Review: Omega Massif, Doomina, Malatesta (Munich, 6.11.2009)

Freitag Abend, 20:00 Uhr: / Friday night 8 p.m.:

Die Oberpfalz-Truppe (ich, Elton, Michi... leider ohne die Jungs von FWWM, die für ihren großen Auftritt am Sunday Smile proben mussten) kommt am Feierwerkgelände an und wird direkt vorm Sunny Red gefragt (Auftritt Tobias Engler): "Seid ihr die Jungs von Doomina?". Da waren wir schon zu viert. Nach kurzer Unterhaltung wurden wir darauf hingewiesen, dass man nun den Keller betreten könne (Auftritt GemueseJoe).

Dann wurde zu aller erst fürs körperliche Wohlbefinden gesorgt (Bier, Cola, Spezi) und darauf wurde uns gesagt, dass Doomina sowohl in einen Stau geraten seien, als auch in eine Polizeikontrolle. Kurz vorm Auftritt der ersten Band (Malatesta) trafen dann auch die Jungs aus Kärnten und der Rest der PRCler aus Innsbruck ein und die Show konnte los gehen.

The “Oberpfalz-Squad” (me, Elton, Michi…unfortunately without the guys from Fire Walk With Me!, who had to practice for their great gig on the Sunday Smile Festival) arrives at the Feierwerk site and get directly asked (appearance Tobias Engler): “Are you the guys in Doomina?” Then we were four already. After a little conversation we were advised that we could enter the venue.

Then we primary looked after our physical well-being (beer, coke) and we were told that Doomina got into a traffic jam as well as in a police check.
Shortly before the beginning of the first performance (Malatesta) the guys from Kärnten and the rest of the PRC members from Innsbruck showed up and the show could begin.

Freitag Abend, 21:15 Uhr: / Friday night 9.15 p.m.: MALATESTA

Malatesta betreten die Bühne und geben sofort Gas... die 4 Münchner lieferten Crust vom feinsten, genau so, wie er sein soll: schnell, hart und dreckig. Die meiner Meinung nach viel zu kurze Show (nur ca. 20 Minuten) war energiegeladen und die 4 Musiker waren mit ganzem Herzen bei der Sache. Nur das Münchner Publikum hat das ganze ziemlich kalt gelassen, aber naja, so ist das halt in München... vielleicht waren Malatesta im Hinblick auf die anderen Bands auch nicht die perfekte Wahl als Vorband, mir hat es trotzdem sehr gut gefallen.

Weiter gings mit einer kurzen Umbaupause, nach der Doomina dann ohne Soundcheck ihren Auftritt hatten.

Malatesta enter the stage and immediately kick off…the four Munich guys play Crust at its best. Like it should be: fast, hard and dirty. The performance, which was way too short in my opinion (20 minutes), was bursting with energy and the four musicians where into it wholeheartedly. Only the Munich audience seemed not to be too impressed, but ok… that’s Munich. Maybe Malatesta wasn’t the perfect pick as an opener, but I enjoyed it anyway.

After a short break Doomina started their show without sound check.

Aufmerksame Leser unseres Blogs kennen die 4 Jungs aus Kärnten viellecht schon, deshalb will ich zum Sound nicht mehr all zu viel sagen... vielleicht nur so viel: Sie kennen keine Genregrenzen und haben für sich definitiv einen ganz eigenen Sound kreiert. Ein bischen Post-Rock hier, ein bischen Doom da, dazu noch eine Prise Heavy-Metal-Gitarren-Solos und, was mir sehr aufgefallen ist, ein ganzer Haufen Professionalität. Außer dem fantastischen March On, Dead Man/Hypersonoruos (mit Soundeffekten aus der Spielzeugpistole) habe ich kein Lied erkannt, aber das lag denke ich mal daran, dass hauptsächlich neue Stücke gespielt wurden. Ich darf euch ein ganz ganz großes Lob aussprechen, das was ihr da abgeliefert hab, habe ich so nicht erwartet... eure Lieder sind Live viel besser als auf CD und wenn ihr mal die Chance habt, einen eurer Auftritte mitschneiden zu lassen, dann bitte ich euch darum: Macht es!

Leider war dann bei Doomina nach ca. 45 Minuten schluss und es begann die letzte Umbaupause, die sich ein bisschen dahinzog... ein guter Zeitpunkt, um sich mal mit den Kollegen aus Kärnten ausführlicher zu unterhalten.

Considerate readers of our blog might know the four guys from Carinthia (Austria), therefore I don’t want to loose much words on their sound. Maybe one thing: They don’t know genre limits and created their own sound. A bit of post rock here, a bit of doom there, in addition a small amount of heavy metal guitar solos and what stands out for me, a bunch of professionalism. Except “March On, Dead Man/Hypersonoruos“ (with sound effects of a toy gun), I didn’t recognize any song because they probably played mostly new ones. I have to compliment you for what you showed off, I haven’t expected. Your songs are live much better than on CD and when you get the chance to record one of your performances, I please you: Do it!

Sadly Doomina’s show ended after 45 minutes and the last break got a bit long… which was a good moment to get in touch with the buddies from Carinthia.

In blaues Licht getaucht beginnen Omega Massif ihr Set mit dem Opener der Geisterstadt LP, In der Mine, und von da an war ich wie in trance. Da vor mir der Hannes stand, hab ich von der Performance nicht viel gesehen, was mich aber nicht weiter gestört hat. Für mich hieß es nur: Augen zu und jeden Augenblick genießen. Omega Massif werden der Bezeichnung auf dem Flyer, Post-Metal Monster, absolut gerecht: doomige Gitarrenriffs und wabernder Bass (der meiner Meinung nach vielleicht ein bisschen zu laut war) - Gänsehautstimmung pur. Auch bei Omega Massif muss ich sagen, dass sie live viel besser sind als auf CD, was für mich sowieso das Kriterium für eine wahrlich gute Band darstellt.

Coated in blue light Omega Massif started their set with the first song of the “Geisterstadt” LP “In der Mine”. From there on I was like in a state of trance. Because Hannes was standing in front of me I couldn’t see much of the performance but that didn’t really matter for me.
For me it was like: Close your eyes and enjoy every moment.
Omega Massif really cope with the term “Post Metal Monster” on the flyer. Doomy guitar riffs and wavering bass (which was a bit too loud in my opinion).
Also to Omega Massif I have to say their much better live than on CD. Which is for me one of the must-haves of a really good band.

Samstag Morgen, 0:10 Uhr: / Saturday morning, 0.10 a.m.: OMEGA MASSIF (Encore)

Als Zugabe stimmen Omega Massif den absoluten Monstersong Unter Null an, was sogar das normalerweise sehr lethargische Münchner Publikum animiert, die Nackenmuskulatur ein bisschen zu strapazieren und den Würzburger Jungs gebührend zu verabschieden.

Nach dem Konzert haben Michi und ich uns dann noch die Geisterstadt LP geholt (was definitiv überfällig war) und dann gings nach kurzer Verabschiedung wieder nach Hause in den Bayrischen Wald.

Zuletzt noch einen ganz ganz großen Dank an den Alex, der ja das Ganze organisiert hat. Ich hoffe mal, dass wir uns alle in nicht all zu ferner Zukunft wiedersehen (aufs Sunday Smile schaff ichs leider nicht) und bedanke mich bei allen, die da waren, um den Underground-Bands ein bisschen unter die Arme zu greifen. Ich fands super, hoffentlich hat es euch genauso gut gefallen wie mir.

As an encore Omega Massif played their downright monster-song “Unter Null”, which actually animated the lethargic Munich audience to strain their neck muscles and bid farewell the guys from Würzburg.

After the concert Michi and I fetched ourselves a copy of the “Geisterstadt” LP (that was definitely overdue) and after a short goodbye we went back into the Bavarian Forest.

At last many thanks to Alex who organized the whole thing. I hope that we’re all meeting again in the near future and thanks to everyone who was there to support some underground bands. Hopefully you enjoyed it as much as I did.

The Great Disappointment - The Great Disappointment (2009)

Post-Rock, Screamo, Hardcore? Es ist wirklich schwer The Great Disappointment einzuordnen. Zu sehr springen sie auf ihrem gleichnamigen Album von einer Stilrichtung in die Andere, überspringen ein paar um dann doch noch auf sie zurückzugreifen. Das verblüffende dabei: Es gelingt ihnen sehr gut diesen Genre-Mix zu einem Ganzen zu verbinden. So facettenreich der Sound ist, so facettenreich präsentieren sich alle beteiligten Musiker. Vom Gesang der teils in Geschrei gipfelt, teils melodiös daher kommt bis hin zur die Gitarrenarbeit die von Post-Rock typischen Triolen bis hin zum gefrickelten Hardcore Riff scheinbar alles bietet.

Der Einstieg kommt mit „Himsa Pt. 1 & 2“. Sehr ruhig geht es zur Sache. Post-Rock prangert über der schönen Melodie. Sehr langsam steigert sich das Stück. Im Hintergrund Schreie. Spannung baut sich auf, wann wird der Hund endlich von der Leine gelassen?! Dann ist es so weit: Drückende Gitarren, hämmernder Rhythmus und brachiales Geschrei aber sofort wieder der Wechsel zurück zur klaren Melodie.

Weiter geht’s mit „Walls“. Der Einstieg überrascht, klarer Gesang in Emo/Indie Manier, ein eingängiges Riff. Insgesamt direkter und einfacher als der Opener. Auch hier wird wieder Geschrei eingesetzt, jedoch dezenter, der Gesang überwiegt bei dem eher kurzen Stück.

„Of Life And Afterlife“ kommt da schon wieder wesentlich brachialer daher. Das Schlagzeug macht richtig Druck und das Geschrei keift einem nur so entgegen. Auch die Gitarrenarbeit erinnert nun wieder eher an Hardcore. Tolles Break! Zwischendrin schön gezupfte Melodien untermalt mit Geschrei – Wechsel vom Hardcore zum Screamo und zurück.

„The Wonderful Wizard of Oz“ ist lediglich ein überleitendes Rauschen zum wieder geradliniger, popiger anmutenden „Flesh & Bones“, das mit schönen Soundspielereien aufwartet und mich dabei in eine kleine Traumwelt entführt. Mehrstimmiger Gesang rundet das wohlig warme, euphorische Gefühl ab, dass einem dieser Song vermittelt: „We are only flesh&bones!“ So ist`s, die Welt ist schön J.

„Thy Kingdom Come“ ist – Überraschung – wieder völlig anders. Der Gesang mutet fast schon psychedelisch an, erinnert an John Frusciante. Wieder ein Bruch und ab geht die Post! The Great Disappointment lieben das Hin- und Herspringen auch innerhalb der Songs, zerstören diese dadurch aber nicht.

„Le’olam lo shuv“ entführt einen wieder in eine Traumwelt. Ruhig, atmosphärisch baut es eine Landschaft um einen herum - keine Ahnung warum das bei mir immer eine Unterwasserlandschaft ist (trotz minutenlangem Vogelgezwitscher am Schluss des Songs) aber vielleicht verbinde ich Delay einfach mit Wasser. Hier wird wieder wunderschöner Post-Rock geboten.

„Our Dreams Are The Light“ & „…That Will Lead Us Home” bilden eine Einheit oder eher ein Geschwister-Paar mit unterschiedlichem Temperament. „Our Dreams Are The Light“ macht da weiter wo „Le’olam lo shuv“ aufhört. Verspielt, verträumt. Nach der kurzen Träumerei geht’s direkt zum harten „…That Will Lead Us Home“ weiter. Hier wird wieder geschrien, gerifft, gewalzt was das Zeug hält. Wechsel baby! Auch hier kommt dieser nicht zu kurz.

Das anschließende „Dorothy“ fügt sich in das Konzept des ganzen Albums ein. Ein freudiges über alle Grenzen Springen.

The Great Disappointment schaffen es trotz verschiedenster Stil Einflüsse ein rundes und einmaliges Gesamtwerk zu kreieren. Dabei wissen sie in allen Bereichen gänzlich zu überzeugen, großartig! Jedoch kein Album zum Nebenbeihören.

Post-Rock, Screamo, Hardcore? It’s kind of hard to allocate The Great Disappointment. The sound of the selftitled album is influenced by many genres. They combine these influences to an integrated whole. Very multifarious stuff. The vocals shouting and also melodious and the guitartracks reaches from postrockish triplets up to Hardcore-Riffs and everything in between.

The Intro is „Himsa Pt. 1 & 2“. A very silent and beautiful melody-based postrockish song. Slowly growing. Shouts in the background. The arrangement is based on thrilling you more and more. When does the breakout start? Here it comes: Oppressive guitars, hammering rhythm and brute shouts but right away a change to the clean melody again. Splendid.

Continuing with „Walls“. The introduction surprises, clean emo-indie-typical vocals and a catchy Riff. All in all more straight and more simply than the opener. Shouts again but the clean vocals overbalance this track.

„Of Life And Afterlife“ is a more brute song. The drums are really hard and the shouts very corrosive. The guitars are once again reminding me of hardcore-based songs. A great break! In between nice picked melodies with shouts again – This song is a constant changeover among Hardcore and Screamo.

„The Wonderful Wizard of Oz“ is a nice noisy interlude to „Flesh & Bones“. „Flesh & Bones“ is convincing with beautiful soundscapes. You’ll feel like being kidnapped into a dream world. Additionally to this, the several-voices-singing will upgrade the comfortly warm feeling of this song. You will never want to leave this place. „We are only flesh & bones!“ That’s right, the world is beautiful J.

„Thy Kingdom Come“ is a surprise once again. Very different than the other songs. The voice is a little bit psychedelic. It reminds of John Frusciante.

„Le’olam lo shuv“ is once again kidnapping you into a dream world. Silent, atmospheric, building a landscape of peace around you. No idea why i always have underwater-feelings with such tunes (aside from the twittering of the birds at the end of the song). Beautiful Post-Rock-Song.

„Our Dreams Are The Light“ & „…That Will Lead Us Home” are building an unit with different temperaments. „Our Dreams Are The Light“ continues the end of „Le’olam lo shuv“. Kittenish, dreamy. After this short reverie „…That Will Lead Us Home“ will show you the hard side of TGD again. Destruction.

The following track „Dorothy“ completes this release. You won’t detect any constraints!

The Great Disappointment manage it despite of the different influences to create a perfect circle of tunes. In addition to that they really know how to overwhelm the listener in all categories. Really great stuff! An album that efforts many time.

Eleventh He Reaches London - Hollow Be My Name (2009)

Post Hardcore ist oft ein sehr ödes Genre obwohl es dem Musiker riesigen Freiraum gibt. Nur noch wenige Bands bieten Innovation und wissen wie man ohne Pop Punk Refrains eingängige Songs schreibt.

Umso schöner zu sehen dass es auch noch Künstler gibt die noch ein ernsthaftes Stück Musik auf die Beine stellen können wie die Australier Eleventh He Reaches London mit „Hollow be my Name“.

Apokalyptisch traurige Grundstimmung, verzweifelte Vocals und solide Instrumentierung lassen einen aufhorchen. Zu Recht, denn diese Scheibe ist einer der Soundtracks für diesen Herbst.

Post Hardcore is often a boring genre although it gives the musician enormous freedom. Only a few bands offer innovation and know how to write catchy songs without a Pop Punk chorus.

So much the better to see that there are artists who can create a intense piece of music like the Australians from Eleventh He Reaches London with „Hollow be my Name“.

Apocalyptically sad prevailing mood, despaired vocals and solid instrumentation let you listen attentively. And justifiably so, because this record is one of this autumn's soundtracks.

I Not Dance - So You Think You Can Stop Me And Spit In My Eyes (2008)

Was kann man zu dieser LP sagen außer, dass sie großartig ist? I Not Dance das sind 3 Kerls aus Österreich die ihr Handwerk einfach perfekt verstehen. Eingängige Melodien, drückende Riffs gepaart mit teils geschrienen, teils gesprochenen Vocals. Screamo vom Feinsten! Vor Allem live beeindrucken die 3 mit ihrer Präsenz und dem Sound den sie aus ihren Instrumenten kitzeln. Musikalisch tu ich mir schwer die Band zu vergleichen oder zu beschreiben. Klar, es gibt viele Screamo Bands und es gibt bestimmt auch einige die I Not Dance ähnlich klingen doch die Jungs haben`s einfach drauf und schnell ihre eigene Identität gefunden. Die Riffs sind mächtig - sehr mächtig - und das obwohl dahinter nur 1 Gitarre und 1 Bass stehen. Verblüffend wie die 2 einen Sound kreieren den manche Band nicht mal mit 2-3 Gitarren plus Bass schafft. Das Schlagzeug tut den Rest und haut richtig rein, reißt mit, akzentuiert die Melodien. Die ruhigen Passagen sind wunderschön mit flüssigen Melodien, die ein bisschen zum Träumen verleiten aber schnell wieder von mächtigen Walzen unterstützt von brachialem Geschrei abgelöst werden. Samples ergänzen das Gesamtwerk und bringen es zur Perfektion. Da wären neben Reden z.B. auch Applaus, welcher geschickt als Rhythmusmittel eingesetzt wird. I Not Dance bedienen sich keiner Klischees. Sie müssen keine Verzweiflung, Trostlosigkeit und Weltuntergang predigen wie es so oft im Screamo und Hardcore Bereich gemacht wird. Sie schaffen es Wucht und Emotion in einer einzigartigen Weise zu kombinieren.

Um dieser Beweihräucherung ein Ende zu machen sei einfach noch mal gesagt:

Grandiose Scheibe, grandiose Band. Punkt!

What can I say about this release in addition to that it’s simply awesome? I Not Dance are 3 guys from austria which just understand their handcraft perfectly. Catchy melodies and oppressive riffs matching with shouted or spoken vocals. Screamo at one’s best! First of all they impress with their live-performance and the neat tunes they are tickling out of their instruments. It’s kind of hard to describe or compare this band. For sure there are masses of Screamo-bands out there but in my opinion I Not Dance stands for its own. The riffs are abundant - very abundant – although there is only 1 guitar and 1 bass-guitar attending. It’s just amazing how these 2 guitarists are able to create such awesome sounds. Most of the bands out there aren’t nearly able to get to this level with 2-3 guitars plus bass-guitar. The drummig lines completes these melodies for 100%. The silent parts are very beautiful with liquid melodies inducing day-dreams but at all times they are detached quickly by abundant guitar-walls supported by brutal shouts. The samples fit very good into the arrangements. In addition to spoken-word-samples there are also appearing applause-samples which are very clever converted into rhythm-beats. I Not Dance don’t need to fool the listeners with despair, bleakness or apocalypse to reach them. They just make it to combine impact with emotion without these things.

Terrific release, terrific band. Fullstop!

Dancing On Debris - …Of Our Self-Made Collapse (2009)

Hardcore aus NRW da war mein Interesse schon geweckt. Also auf die Festplatte mit „…of our self-made collapse“ und los geht`s.

Ich muss sagen mich erinnern Dancing on Debris teils stark an Buried Inside besonders der erste Song „Nachtlied“ nach dem Intro lässt einen schon kurz stutzen „Was Buried Inside haben einen neuen Song?“. Das ist aber nicht abwertend gemeint – ich liebe Buried Inside J - es ist nur verblüffend wie nahe Dancing on Debris dem Sound und den Strukturen der Herren aus Ottawa kommen und dies ist eines der größten Komplimente die ich in diesen musikalischen Gefilden machen kann. Dieser gekonnte Wechsel von verzweifelter, brachialer, hinausgeschriener Wut und ruhigen, melancholischen, Weltuntergang - Melodien ist einfach beeindruckend. Technisch einwandfrei und sehr überzeugend legt die Band einem Bretter vor und zieht einen mit wunderschönen Melodien und verzweifelten Vocals in den Bann.

Eine interessante Idee verfolgt die Band beim Gesang. Deutsch gilt hinlänglich als eine sehr harte Sprache. Für nicht deutsprachige klingt unsere Sprache aggressiv mit seinen vielen harten Lauten wurde mir schon häufiger bestätigt – ähnlich wie für unsereins wohl Russisch klingt. Eigentlich logisch, dass diese Sprache sich für „mitten – in – die – Fresse“ Bretter bestens eignet und dies zeigen Dancing on Debris. Deutsch und Englisch mischen sich, ergänzen sich und sogar in ruhigen, gesprochenen Passagen macht sich das Deutsche sehr gut.

Ein kleiner Wermutstropfen bleibt jedoch: „Till The End“ ist das Schlusslied der durchweg überzeugenden Scheibe und will einem mit seinen knapp 35min. Spielzeit weismachen es sei ein Monstrum. Was sich dahinter verbirgt ist dann aber endloses Schellack – Geknister, das nur ein paar Mal von kurzen Instrumentalpassagen unterbrochen wird. Ich bin kein Feind der ewigen Stille, auch nicht wenn diese mit Knistern unterlegt ist, spielen wir doch selbst in der Band mit diesem Stilmittel, das gerade gegen Ende einer Scheibe oft noch einen Übergang oder eine Abgrenzung zu Bonussongs etc. bieten soll. Aber mal ehrlich 35min.!?! Das muss nun wirklich nicht sein und ich bin selbst erstaunt, dass ich wirklich die Geduld hatte mir dieses Stück – wenn man es so nennen kann – in seiner Gänze anzuhören.

Das tut jedoch dem Gesamtbild keinen Abbruch: Grandioses Hardcore – Brett mit wunderschönen Verschnaufpausen. Ein rundum gelungener Soundtrack zum Tanzen auf Schutt der dieser trostlosen Stimmung mehr als gerecht wird. Kompliment!

Hardcore from NRW [Germany] reading this my interest awoke. So I downloaded “…of our self-made collapse” onto the HDD and here we go.

I have to admit sometimes Dancing on Debris sound strongly like Buried Inside for me. Specially the first Song “Nachtlied” (“Lullaby”) after the Intro let`s me think “What Buried Inside have a new song?”. But this isn`t meant deprecatingly – I love Buried Inside – it`s just amazing how close Dancing on Debris get to the sound of these guys from Ottawa and this is one of the biggest compliments I can make when it`s about Hardcore. This skilful changes between desperate, brutal, shrilled anger and calm, melancholic and apocalyptic melodies are impressive. Above any reproach and always convincing the band serves kick-ass riffs and catches you with beautiful melodies and these hopeless vocals.

Worth to be mentioned is the change between English and German vocals. For people not speaking German this language seems to sound pretty hard and aggressive maybe like Russian does. So I guess it`s just consequent to use German for hardcore music. Dancing on Debris show these perfect – German and English are going hand in and even the soft, spoken German lyrics sound great to me.

There`s just one downer: The last song “Till the End” of this completely great record tries to con you with it`s approximately 35 min. of playtime. You might thing “Wow that song must be a monster” yeah that`s what I thought to. But it turns out to be just 35 min. of shellac- sizzling noises with some quite short instrumental passages. I`m not an enemy of “eternal silence” at the end of an record to integrate some bonus tracks or something like that. But honestly 35min!?! There`s really no need to make this one that long.

But at the end all that`s left to say is that “…of our self-made collapse” by Dancing on Debris is a great hardcore record. A soundtrack for dancing on debris which perfectly draws the picture of this grim place we might live in.

Our Subatomic Earth – Infinite (2009)

Der Mond ist letzlich ein großer Haufen Dreck. Und wunderschön. Ausserdem warten seine geografischen Bezeichnungen geradezu auf eine musikalische Umsetzung. Haben sich jedenfalls Our Subatomic Earth aus (Land) gedacht und so liest sich auch die Tracklist zu deren neuem Album „Infinite“ wie das who-is-who einer Mondkarte. „Mare Crisium“ (Meer der Gefahren) und „Oceanus Procellarum“ (Ozean der Stürme) um nur zwei zu nennen.

Umgesetzt wurde das Konzept der lunaren Unendlichkeit von Schmutz und Schönheit durch Klangwelten, die unvermeidlich zwischen Mogwai, Godspeed You! Black Emperor einerseits und älteren Neurosis und Isis andererseits angesiedelt sind. Eine eigene unverwechselbare Note erhält dieses Album aber durch seine Live-Atmosphäre. Der rauhe Sound hat Proberaum-Charakter, wodurch das Album insbesondere in den flächigeren Momenten eine unfassbare Intensität gewinnt, während es leider in den eher riff-dominierten hardcorelastigen Sequenzen an Kontur verliert und sich dann fast in kracherner Beliebigkeit verliert. Das ist sehr schade, denn auch diese Passagen hätten eigentlich, vor allem wegen ihrer Durchdachtheit ein Lob verdient.

Das Album ist deswegen auch sicherlich nicht jedermanns Sache, wie sein Thema ist sie nun mal ein Batzen aus elegantem Dreck, gewagt und alleine deshalb mindestens ein Reinhören, wenn nicht sogar ein Liebgewinnen wert.

At last, the moon is nothing but a big bunch of dirt. And it is beautiful. Moreover, its geographic names are just waiting for a musical adaptation. These must have been the thoughts of Our Subatomic Earth from (Land), therefore, the tracklist of their new record “Infinite” could be read as the Who-is-Who of a lunar map. Only to mention “Mare Crisium” (See of Menace) and “Oceanus Procellarum” (Ocean of Storms).

The concept of lunar infinity of dirt and beauty works through soundscapes, settled between Mogwai and GY!BE on the one hand and elder Neurosis and Isis on the other. This records receives its very own note first of all through its live-atmosphere. The raw sound has got rehearsal room quality, which leads to unknown intensity in its aerial moments. Unfortunately the same sound leads in riff-dominated hardcore passages to a loss of contour and sometimes nearly to a blatant vacuity. What is a pity, because also these parts should be praised because of their cleverness.

This is why the album certainly will not suite everybody’s taste. It simply is like its concept a lump of elegant dirt, brave and worth to check it and maybe also to fall in love with it.

Le Pré Où Je Suis Mort - Le Pré Où Je Suis Mort (EP) (2008)

Ein emotionsgeladenes Debut zwischen Screamo und Post Hardcore liefert der 5er aus Frankreich/der Schweiz mit Le Pré Où Je Suis Mort ab, was soviel heißt wie The Field Where I Died. Bei einer durchschnittlichen Tracklaufzeit von über 8 Minuten kann man also gespannt sein, was die Schweizer/Franzosen hier so alles zu sagen haben.

Wunderschöne Melodien treffen hier auf epische Riffs und lautes Geschrei auf leisen Sprechgesang ohne in das ewiggleiche Laut/Leise-Schema zu verfallen, wie es bei vielen Bands aus diesem Genre häufig der Fall ist. Auch hört sich dies in den vier Tracks ganz natürlich an, klingt nie gezwungen sondern passt immer zur jeweiligen Gesamtstimmung des Tracks.

Leider kann ich über die Lyrics rein gar nichts sagen, weil natürlich auf Französisch gesungen/geshoutet wird, was mir hier, obwohl mir die Klangfarbe der französischen Sprache eigentlich nicht gefällt, doch sehr positiv aufgefallen ist... ganz einfach deshalb, weil es so unglaublich gut ins Gesamtbild der EP passt.

Ganz besonders hat es mit der Track Silence, der Closer der Platte, angetan. Hier ist alles drin, was diese EP so fantastisch macht und vor allem die letzten Minuten, die sich ganz langsam aufbauen um dann fulminant mit Trommelwirbeln und Streichern diese hervorragende Platte zu beenden... fast wie bei einer Post-Rock-Platte, bloß mit angepasstem Tempo und Double-Bass.

Abschließend möchte ich dieser Band ein ganz großes Dankeschön sagen für eine EP, die bei mir in den letzten Wochen nahezu dauerrotiert und die meiner Meinung nach ein viel größeres Publikum verdient. Deshalb gibt es diese Perle nun auch auf unserem kleinen, aber feinen Blog für euch da draußen. Bon appétit!

Le Pré Où Je Suis Mort (The field where I died), five guys hailing from Switzerland and France, deliver an emotionally laden debut somewhere between Screamo and Post Hardcore. And with an average tracklength of more than 8 minutes one wonders, what these guys have to say.

Beautiful melodies meet epic riffing and loud shouting meets soft-spoken words without succumbing to a generic loud/quiet pattern that is inherent in most of the releases by other bands in this particular genre. This dynamic structure sounds very natural in the four songs and is always appropriate for each particular song.

Sadly, I cannot comment on the lyrics, because they are sung/shouted in French... and I never took the time to learn to speak French, because I don't like the overall sound of the French language. But here, I regret to have been so stubborn, because the sound of this EP fits perfectly to the acoustic color of the French language.

My favourite track on this fabulous debut is Silence, the closer of this EP. It has everything that makes this EP great. It's last five minutes build up to a brilliant ending with drumrolls and strings... something you would expect from a Post Rock record. But here you get appropriate speed and some double bass action.

At last, I want to thank this band for an EP that has been on heavy rotation on my MP3 player in the last few weeks and which deserves a much bigger audience in my opinion. That is why you can download this little gemstone from our small Blog from now on. Bon appétit!

Mit einem kurzen, industrialartigen Intro beginnen 17 intensive Minuten Musik, die irgendwo zwischen Post Hardcore, Sludge und Metal pendelt, gespielt von fünf talentierten Brasilianern: Progress in between the Dead things heißt die EP, die sich jeder Fan von Kylesa und Cult Of Luna mal anhören sollte.

Mehr muss eigentlich nicht gesagt werden: die CD macht viel Spass und der einzige Kritikpunkt ist, dass sie nur 17 Minuten dauert. Also Leute, runterladen, rauf auf den MP3-Player und raus in die Sonne!

A short, industrial-esque Intro starts off 17 minutes of intense music that lies somewhere between Post Hardcore, Sludge and Metal, performed by five talented musicians from Brasil. They called their debut EP Progress in between the Dead things and every fan of Kylesa and Cult Of Luna should give this recording a spin.

Dancing On Debris - Dancing On Debris (2008)

Alright, here’s the deal: Dancing on Debris, a five piece from Aachen / Germany, plays music. Some kind of this post hardcore / screamo blend with a focus on quiet/loud dynamics, translating into each other either with eruptive start-stop bursts or solid build crescendos. While I honestly could namedrop a ton of screamo bands already having used the same rough formula to its extent, this little self-titled record offers six contributions not really being second to none. Dancing on Debris dancing on familiar realms to a familiar beat, kind of.

Instrumentally sophisticated and thorough, the vocals range among nagging screams, desperate yelps and a few clean passages, marking the clear highlight of Dancing On Debris sound. With a tone that especially in the less distorted sonic spectrum reminds at earlier Trophy Scars works, the singer is able to carry the band through the different soundscapes and subtle genre-shiftings with passion and a great musically comprehension.

Result: Cohesive and diversified hardcore music whose soaring melodies and crushing outbursts take you on an emotion-ridden rollercoaster that’s high and fast, winding and with certain aesthetics; a rollercoaster type already existing in nearly every other possible execution, but worth a ride at any given opportunity.

Last Minute To Jaffna - Volume I (2008)

Für alle Fans der etwas härteren Gangart habe ich dieses mal etwas ganz besonderes: Last Minute To Jaffna spielen auf Volume I ihre ganz eigene Version von Postcore, gemischt mit minimal Noise, Ambient, Postrock und Sludge. Auf Grund der durchschnittlichen Songlänge von ungefähr 9 Minuten klingt das ganze jedoch immer homogen und niemals überladen.

Bis auf das Interlude Chapter VIII besitzen alle Songs eine sehr dynamische Struktur: zarte Postrock-Klänge werden durch Riff-Gewitter oder Doublebass-Attacken zerstört, verzerrte Gitarren lösen sich in Ambientsounds auf. Diese Dynamik wirkt jedoch niemals gezwungen oder unnatürlich sondern ist immer eine logische Weiterführung des Songs.

Weiter fällt positiv auf, dass sich das ganze Album anhört, als würde es nur aus einem überlangen Track bestehen, was auch die fehlenden Tracknamen erkären würde (die Songs heißen Chapter X, VI, VIII, V, XI). Die Vocals sind immer angemessen, niemals brutal oder weinerlich, sondern der musikalischen Situation angepasst... und zum Beginn von Chapter V erinnert der Gesang an Alice in Chains... mich zumindest.

Das Album der vier Turiner ist bei bei den Labels Concubine Records, Swarm Of Nails, Hypershape Records und Consouling Sounds erschienen und ist bei diversen Händlern erhältlich (siehe unten). Wer jetzt neugierig geworden ist, kann sich das Album bei einem dieser Händler bestellen, wer mal reinhören will ist dieses mal auf Myspace oder LastFM angewiesen.. es lohnt sich trotzdem ;)

For all of you out there who like their music heavy as a ton of bricks I have something very special: Last Minute To Jaffna invented their own blend of Postcore on Volume I, mixing Post Hardcore with Minimal Noise, Ambient, Postrock and Sludge. And because their songs are averagely nine minutes long they don't ever sound inwardly torn (what can happen if there are too many different styles).

All of the songs, except Chapter VIII, which is an ambient interlude, do have a very dynamic structure: delicate Postrock sounds are destroyed by a thunderstorm of riffs and double bass, distorted guitars dissolve into ambient sounds. The inherent dynamic never sounds forced, it always makes perfect sense for the songs.

The whole record sounds like it were one 45 minute long track, which I like very much and what might explain why the songs don't have distinctive titles (they carry the titles Chapler X, VI, VIII, V, XI). The vocals are always appropriate, never too brutal or too whiny, always adapting to the current musical situation... and in the beginning of Chapter V the vocals remind me of Alice in Chains, which I really like.

The four guys from Turin released their LP through Concubine Records, Swarm Of Nails, Hypershape Records and Consouling Sounds and it is distributed by different stores (which you can see on the bottom of this article). Who now wants to listen to this band either has to order a copy or visit their Myspace page or LastFM, which I would definitely recommend ;)
